We need a 'real' captain...

Thats why we need a centre midfielder...look at United before and after they signed Keane...Arsenal before and after Vieira etc etc

Agree Andy that Coleman had his worst 45 minutes in an Everton shirt yesterday but he wasn't captain, so I don't think you can correlate his performance with the captaincy. Maybe his poor performance was because he was wondering why he had been relieved of the duty since having it last week.

The type of player you are talking about is hard to come by so hopefully Coleman will get the honour for the foreseeable future and his form will improve. As said, the Ireland captaincy hasn't burdened him at all.

United won the league the season before they signed Keane. After he left they won the league 5 of the next 10 seasons.

Not saying he wasn't a great player like

Nah he signed for them summer of 93. They finished 10 points clear of Villa the season before

Blackburn were the man city back then...spending oodles...keane of course agreed to move to them and went back on his word and joined united.

Thats the difference as well as how it helped the 'Fergie Fledglings' become leaders themselves under keanes captaincy.

..not really into this ‘inspirational captain’ lark. Our most successful captains led successful teams. Ratcliffe wasn’t a shouter, he didn’t roll up his sleeves and give players a rollicking. Labone was a gentleman, you would rarely see him having a go at team mates. They led successful teams because the teams were good, not because they were captain.

We only see captains on the pitch, we don’t have a clue what respect they have within the dressing room and impact on individuals.

Agree with that Eggs, and you don't have to be the captain, just someone who makes the others play, think of Bobby Collins, Peter Reid, Andy Gray, Tim Cahill they led by example, never gave up and just wanted to win and made the other players feel the same, there is nobody on the books at the moment like that although I'd say Seamus comes close.

There's no real leader in the team. Similar problem to united.

The old guard had a load of them. Keane, viera, gerrard, terry. You could see how it meant when they won and lost.

Oh for the boys of 84-85,Ratters had the armband but it could have literally been given to any of them,#winners

..I watched that group lots, even in training and it always stood out that there was hardly any chastising. Weird. They were as a collective group as you’ve ever seen. Everybody knew their job, everybody wanted to be there for their team mates. If somebody lapsed, there’d be a look from Bracewell, or a look from Reid. No words, just alook because words did not have to be said. Everybody just knew.

They might not have had the quality of that brilliant 1970 team, but they were unique as a collective. Ratcliffe wore the arm band.
