I think 'hardcases' have pretty much gone out of the game. You can't crunch players like you used to and stay on the pitch. Looking at the
disciplinary table Swansea's Routledge has by far had the most bookings with 15 and I certainly wouldn't call him a dirty player. Snodgrass, Fellaini, Barry and Bale are the next most-cautioned midfielders with 10 yellow cards each.
What I'd like to see is a specialised holding midfielder. Last season the most successful tacklers in the league were Dembele (75%), Allen (73%), Parker (71%), Cabaye (70%) and Figeuroa (70%). Interestingly, when Felli was played deeper he was the third best tackler in the league. I know that Neville and Osman aren't going to be anywhere near the top of the stats tables since Ossie gets forward a lot and is quite lightweight, whereas Pip struggles to cover the ground and get close enough quick enough to make a tackle. Hopefully Gibson's return will change things.
