Bit of a daft thread but as well as the famed spuds away game save he had an absolute blinder v Sheff Wed at Hillsborough and made 3 or 4 saves to keep us in it......right at the end of this superb vid ..... 4:30 approx

'Only a keeper'. Jesus wept.

Let's put baines in goal for the next game and see how he does eh? Just look at saturdays game for a lesson in how the quality of the keeper can affect a result.
You've well and truly misinterpreted my point. Often the perceived 'greats' of football are typically outfield players.

Think of those today: Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar etc. Neur on the other hand, a wonderful player and vital team members, recieves much less praise and accolade. Why?

Because he's a keeper. My point was that for me Southall was able to transcend this shackle and be probably the best player regardless of position I've seen in a long, long time.

And that's much harder for a player in his position to achieve. But Jesus wept hey.... let's keep things simple for you.

Ah I know what you meant, just the way it was worded made me laugh. There are a lot of people who genuinely don't think a keeper is as important as other positions and I've never understood why.

He was before my time as a supporter but since I've been one, every time the subject of our best GK has come up, he's always been first on the list.

This is a really silly question, but I guess it kills time and is better than moaning and groaning about something. For those too young to know, you need to understand, Neville was a true grafter and a true blue. We need more like him and less of the namby pamby, spoiled, millennial mindset, overpaid agent fodder that permeate the game now. Miss you, Big Nev!

Unfortunately I think even his last contract was around 10-12k which of course is a lot but not compared to nowadays and if for the majority of your career you were on low 4 figures and then you get divorced and have a few court cases it can soon go.

It's sad, a legend like that should be involved with the club but he is far too outspoken to toe the company line!

Outspoken? Koeman?

Using the keepers of today, what/who would you compare him to ?

Was he Manuel neuer commanding his box, or the class of Gigi Buffon ?

Keepers today are not anywhere as good as keepers from the past IMO.... southall, seaman, schmicheal, grabelaar even Tim flowers was a decent keeper.... I suppose cech and Neur are in the same sort of style as them... but cassilas, Valdes, cortouis? Na... not for me... de gea is good but I would still rather have schmiechel... seaman and bev...

Outspoken? Koeman?

Well, quite! But you have to remember he is our superstar manager and he says what he wants and we are lucky to have him.

The real message is delivered by Sharp et al who must have sore necks from agreeing with everything the club does and help manage down expectations, after all how can we compete nowadays... Meanwhile we have watched Birmingham, Swansea and Leicester amgonst others pick up trophies. (n)

Look at these comments from Southall:

How can you have someone around the club that has that mentality? jeez might start winning things and you know how hard we have been avoiding that!
