I rejoiced when both they and Newcastle went down.
I'll always hate Newcastle a lot more than Villa. I remember when Newcastle went down I was in my final year of uni at the time and was watching their game with my Geordie mate in the house share we lived in. It was pure joy from my side, watching him sit there, head in his hands, as it slowly dawned on him that his beloved black and white army would be plying their trade in the second tier. If only they could stay there, but unfortunately seems like they're back in the big time next season.

This just makes me angry at the [Phrase removed] for denying the chance for us to blow that out of the water by getting one or two big ears ourselves.

Agree, but it's still a European Cup.

We're the bigger club consistently, but in terms of pure stats it's a toss up.
TBH, they should scrap the old EC tag now in the way they have done with the UEFA Cup - retain the physical trophy but denote that they are now defunct, in the same way they did with the ECWC.

That would only be logical. There are the CL and EL now.

This was the last thing I needed to see. I pissed myself laughing and now everyone at work knows I'm not doing work.

That 1970 team of ours bottled it big time, too (I'm assuming?).

How on Earth did we managed to get knocked out by Panathinaikos with the final also being at Wembley?

Remember an interview with one of the players who was playing that night and he said that the Panathinaikos fans kept them up all night. Thought it was a poor excuse.

Seems like a typical Everton in Europe situation.

I'd go with these.

Big no doubt.

Bigger? No not for me, not quite.

I think arguments over the "size" of clubs are fairly redundant tbh. It's all relative. Barcelona win everything all the time, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if they went insolvent and disappeared tomorrow. Everton are the biggest team in my mind because we're intangibly boss and no success or lack of success will change that.

I think Villa can claim to be just as big a club.I don't accept the argument that they are a bigger club than us but all in all i quite like Villa.

Football is also about the here and now though. They've been relegated after most of a decade of irrelevance in the prem. Even in O'Neill's hay day I don't think if memory serves me they finished ahead of Moyes' Everton when we were qualifying for Europe? (07-10?)

It's like trying to claim Forest or Leeds are bigger than us. How long can the claim persist if they are spending multiple years out of the top flight?

Likewise can we claim we're bigger than Chelsea when they are hoovering up trophies, buying the best players, and playing in a shiny stadium? Can Liverpool?

Villa are s historical club no doubt, with great support, but they're not bigger than us at the moment, and if Moshiri has his way we could go into a stratosphere beyond them.

They'd have had to beat Red Star Belgrade and then Ajax to win it from there though. Red Star were very good at the time and Ajax were just flowering into a dynasty.
