But what do I know, Dean Saunders was my favourite player when I was a kid.

Kinda answers yourself mate.

But a decent post anyrate. Villa get a bad press from some one here, I dont really get it myself.

They won that European Cup when it was harder for an Englsh club not to.
It's always on their mantlepiece though mate. Not saying it wasn't easier back then, I agree with you on that. History is history though. They'll always have that win. Villa are/were a big side however you choose to look at it. Still got huge support a good old ground and perhaps a chance to do it all again under new ownership. I know others relate us more to Spurs, but to me Villa are the side we're most similar too. Might be a little biased mind, being a Brummmie and hanging around with the bad meffs all day.

Yes, they won big ears. But Forest did twice and in more style than that scabby up and under team with Peter Withe in it. They've also been relegated 6 times. That latter point speaks volumes for me. Look at the historical elite this way:

Number of times relegated:

Arsenal 1
Everton 2
Liverpool 3
Spurs 4
United 5

...and Everton had the biggest burden in terms of longevity in the top flight given that we were founding members of the league and went into the top flight from the off in 1888, we therefore had many more seasons to remain in the old first division...and, unlike others there, we pretty much came right back up - four seasons in the second flight, total. That is an incredible record over 129 years of league football.

Add that to our better title haul and ECWC and it way outperforms Villa and their 7 titles and 1 EC win.

This club is a giant. An utter giant that has almost no peer in this country.

Too much is put on Villa's European Cup win, it was not the same competition that it is now, during that time it was harder for an English club to lose it than win it.

I'm pretty sure we could have beaten Steaua Bucharest with the team we had at the time.

Out of all of that mate, I can only argue a little. Not that I'm trying to, mind. Not picking a fight here.

"Add that to our better title haul and ECWC and it way outperforms Villa and their 7 titles and 1 EC win".

We have 9 titles, they have 7. We have 5 FA cups, they have 7. We have never won the sodding League Cup in all of it's formats. They've got 5 (I think). And then there's our respective European titles. Theirs trumps ours unfortunately. I think we're not as far ahead as you'd like to think mate. We do have a shed load of Charity Shields though and they've only got the one like....

The way I see it is that success wise, their trophy haul is far superior to Spurs and far more credible as they have 7 titles and a European Cup. FA Cups and League Cups are good for the fans, but they are no where near a League title in terms of achievement for me. I'd value 4 FA Cups equal to a title, and 5 League Cups equal to a title. The European Cup would be a similar value to the title. It is still a Cup competition that any team can win, even if they're not the best, but it's held in such high regard as you are then crowned Champions of Europe.

With that in mind, we are leading 9-8 for the trophies that are actually the most meaningful. Villa then have 5 League Cups which puts it at 9-9 in my criteria, and they then have 2 more FA Cups which puts them slightly ahead. I'd mark them down though for their lack of meaningful success in the last 100 years. 1 title to our 7, and after taking all that in to consideration, it puts us pretty even.

They are now in the Championship which then pushes it in our favour.

Other than that we are very similar sized clubs, and I see no reason to put them down as some no mark club when they are one of the Great clubs in English Football. They are deservedly ridiculed up and down the country for their current plight though, and long may it continue! The less threat to us getting back to the top the better.

Titles trumps everything. It ls why ALL club honours lists start out with them. There's a hierarchy of trophies, and the national title is at the top of the tree.

But dont underestimate the number of seasons played at the very top. We head that list. There isn't a club that's played more seasons in the top flight than Everton.

Villa have been out of the top flight for 14 seasons (two of them in the old third division!). That's over 1 in every 10 league seasons they've played has been played outside of elite football. We have played 4 seasons in division two. Everton are quite simply far and away a club with more obvious elite history than Villa...than any club in England.

Not gonna quote you lads cos way too much to post. I'm in agreement that league titles are the Holy Grail. No doubts. I'm not even suggesting Villa are bigger than us. Heaven forbid. I just think they get brushed off a little easily. As for our top flight record? It's second to none (regarding our stay, not titles). I still get looks every time I tell folks that it is us, and not Arsenal, who has spent the most time in the top division. Arsenal consecutively though, of course. I ain't having a go. Villa are a (historically) big club in my eyes though. As a Brummie with Villa family, I'm still glad I'm one of the chosen. No doubts.
