A challenge system wouldn’t really make any difference because it would just be used for every goal anyway, because they’re the difference makers and there’s few enough of them to justify just using it for the sake of it.There is only 2 ways forward with VAR is managers challenge like NFL, you get 1 per half if you are right and your challenge is accepted then you keep it for another attempt if you are wrong you lose it with a 30 second time limit for replays, the second way is to bin it altogether. If it is taking 3 minutes to allow a clearly onside goal and another 3 to disallow a clear penalty VAR in it's current form is broken.
It could be fine if it was just used as a general tidying up tool. Goal goes in, VAR just has a quick check that nothing obvious was missed, goal given. Penalty not given, VAR says to ref you’ve dropped a clanger there he definitely trips him, penalty given. Nobody would have an issue with that, it was sold as stopping clear and obvious errors and that would undoubtedly be a good thing.
The issue is them trying to microanalyse things and almost go looking for stuff. There was no need for the delay on betos goal yesterday, or for palaces goal last week. If you can’t see an offside from 2 replays he’s not offside, nobody cares if his shoulder was 2mm ahead. And the penalty decision was just not a clear and obvious error in anyone’s book, it was a bit soft and he went down easily but he clearly was impeded.
