VAR - the death of football (as I know it)

FFS...can we not, as civilised human beings, trust a man/woman who has trained for years to get to the position they're in to carry out their job correctly and allow them the odd wee mistake without moaning like a bunch of feckin' bed wettin' millennials who'd rather settle for a 0-0 vs Stoke (or some other such gash) than see a debatable 1-0 or 0-1 - referee mistakes can work in your favour as well as against lest us not forget?

Sit two people down in front of a dodgy penalty decision and you'll very likely get two different opinions anyway so how can you trust VAR when it's still down to one person's assessment?

It's the death of football, so it is. I'm glad I'm old school and not part of this moaning, whinging, sore-loser, society that's creeping into almost everything these days.

It's a game ffs. Entertainment. Let's not tear the soul out of it and let's not start pretending it's more important that nurses, surgeons, emergency service personnel etc. Jeezus.

(had to get that off my chest)
Agree with you, totally. We dont need that crap. As long as humans are refs there will be errors made in the match, even with VAR. WE saw that in continental cup.
Im a ref me self and i hate to see whats happening in the game with all these VARs and idiotic DIVING PANELS these do not give anything into the game. It's other way around. They take something out of the game.

Just curious - does this get displayed on the screens at the game as they are doing the reviews?

Certainly wasn’t the case at Anfield tonight.

And I cannot see it being on big screens ar football matches.

One can just imagine the seething tension among the home crowd when they feel robbed by a decision which has gone against that they see as the blatantly obvious.

i.e. A decision against their team.

The propensity to violence will be strong.

Everybody moans about these sort of new systems at first and usually tweaking is needed to get it right. Whether it be American Football, Rugby, NBA, Cricket...folks have always moaned when it was first rolled out.

It won't be perfect to start but I reckon more rights will be righted than wrongs completely missed.

This bit doesn’t matter to me. I just can’t be arsed half heartedly celebrating every goal because I know it might be disallowed 4 minutes later.

The drama about going the match is your emotional, natural response to incidents. Bad tackle on our player? Scream and shout. Goal for? Celebrate. Goal against? Gutted. Soon it’ll become “goal for.. maybe, maybe not, we’ll see in a few minutes then give a half hearted cheer because the moment’s gone”.

Load of my arse.

Yeah but won't you cheer your tits off when the result of the review is a good one?

Maybe. But it still wouldn’t be the same as the ball crossing the line and knowing you’ve scored a second later.

I also think it’ll mean a lot more disallowed goals and lower scoring games (today excepted of course). If a forward gets played through and the linesman wrongly puts his flag up, what happens? Does the forward play on and put it in the net? If so, is it given? Does the player get booked for kicking the ball away?

Let me put it to you from my perspective as an American who has gone through the process with American football. While the stop/start nature of the game immediately says it would have to be different with footy, by no means does it change the fan experience...except make it even more dramatic.

The team scores and you erupt in full on celebration. Then from time to time you then fret to see the replay on the big screen...everyone waiting on pins and needles to see. When you see it is good you erupt again. If it's close and they rule against you, you boo like crazy.

It will have to be tweaked...but as it goes now in the NFL every play under 2 minutes is subject to review...plus all goal scoring events.

It's not perfect yet and what can be reviewed and what cannot will be key for VAR to work in football.

Nope. You are wrong on there. This is no longer a game. It is now a multi-billion pound a year business.

Practically every other sport uses technology in one form or another to officiate, it is about bleedin' time football got on it as well.

..i’m all for VAR. I think it will eventually ensure more of a level playing field for decision making which at the moment invariably favours certain teams. At the moment the process is a bit of a mess but it will become more efficient and possibly enhance the match going experience.

I'm on the fence about it tbh. I would previously have been a full-on advocate for using technology, but I can sort of see what people mean when they say it removes some of the natural emotion from the game. Likewise, we do have to wait for the whole process to be refined to judge it, bad decisions are just as damaging

That's just awful though.

It looked awful last night. WBA go 3 up, fans celebrate....then wait a minute to actually make sure they don't look like tits to confirm a goal. There's instant silence.

I honestly don't think it works in football due to the fact the rules are interpreted differently compared to Rugby etc. It's why the diving panel has been an utter farce also.
