The NFL is the only American sports league that blacks out its games on TV. At first they did it to protect the gate receipts but since the early 1970s (following federal legislation) it’s been tied to attendance. For a long time if the game sold out 72 hours in advance then it would air in the local market. Now you only have to sell something like 85% of the tickets. It’s rare for a game to be blacked out locally these days, maybe just a couple per year.

Yep. IIRC he was at Palace away, and posted from the game along the lines of "at least I follow the team", or something similar.

Put a few lads nose out of joint that. Especially as he never paid for a ticket/pint/anything out of his own actual money it seemed.

But as was pointed out the way it’s done in the states and the game has to be at least 85/100 % sold out or a 50 mile blackout area then it could work.
It would work for most clubs who sell out their home games
