And the reason Ukraine wanted to join NATO was because of Russia's actions towards them since they gained independence. Also keep in mind, that while Ukraine wanted to join NATO they were decades away from being accepted into the alliance for a variety of reasons + since the war started Zelensky has stated that joining NATO is no longer an aspiration, only joining the European Union.
