If there is a possibility of a negotiated peace, it has to be explored.

If its clear no peace is possible, the Russians are serially lying and Putin is going to wipe them out, it brings in more international support (as in from more than just the West) because it will be even more clear that what they are trying to do is revert to might-makes-right (which is in noones interest).

If on the other hand it is genuine and could be lasting, it needs to be explored too - the nightmare scenario is that Russia takes the whole country after a long fight, tens / hundreds of thousands are killed, millions face starvation across the world and the West gets blamed for ignoring peace and "losing". That could well result in all manner of unintended consequences that we in Europe might be left to deal with ourselves in 2024.

I see where you're coming from, but a road to peace with Russia is likely not done with the aid of the US, and you know why so I don't need to explain and is actually more likely to lead to the nightmare scenario anyway.

Also Russia are serially lying and only a very naive person believes they are not.

We should simultaneously condemn Putin’s criminal war of aggression and be careful not to slip into arrogant insanity ourselves. Wars bring out the worst in all sides, and creating a world without war will require the United States to be self-critical rather than self-righteous.
