Is this getting to the point where America should answer Putin's threats and treatment of the Ukrainian people's plight. Maybe call his bluff, I realise the implications could be horrific, but with no threat back, Putin is going to get more powerful.

Yea Odessa and Kharkiv are both cities with strong cultural links to Russia yet it seems like that won't spare them from being absolutely flattened by missiles.

A large part of the population identify as ethnic Russians. Most people speak Russian at home. But the majority of the city do not want to be annexed into the Russian state. It's just short of civil War.
