"They are killing women and children. It is war."

Message my wife got from someone near Kharkiv in a small town 10 minutes ago. They don't know if it's Russian or Ukrainian forces firing whilst retreating.

It's awful.
Unfortunately it was to be expected, was there ever any war in history of human race where civilians didn't suffered the most.
The longer this goes, the more frustrated Russians gonna become and they gonna start using heavy artillery and bombers against cities

Same thing happened during WW1 when supposedly powerful Empire of Austria-Hungary invaded small country of Serbia, they got beaten back twice (to shock of the world) and frustrated soldiers started doing some nasty [Poor language removed] against Serbian population

Vlad's lads having a shocker in here.

They've been jocked right in front of the class. It would be embarrassing if it wasn't so tragic. Putin joining the likes of Hitler and Mussolini as despicable killers who would have otherwise been obscure, pathetic characters if not for the intervention of extraordinary circumstance

Really? That might seem the case now (and like I said in the pictures I saw they were being shouted at by the crowd but not under attack) but going forward it may not be so obvious

This image of suicidal Ukrainians is I think overplayed considerably
Even if they do get a grip on Ukraine, how long do you realistically think they can keep it.
Do you think the rest of the world are just going to go 'oh well, Russia won, lets lift the sanctions and return to normalcy but with Putin sniffing around other eastern block countries?
No, the Russians are in real trouble here. They are being backed in to a corner which is very dangerous but there's no way anyone is going to let them out.

Even more than that, do they think that Ukranians wont just try and kill them every day. Invading a country and pushing key objectives is one thing, but maintaining security is another and is brutal when the entire populace hates you. Every single unit and checkpoint will have a barrel or rocket launcher aimed at them every day, and every house will house them. That would mean the only chance Russia would have to maintain any control would be a brutal escalation of killing on site and killing civilians in towns who they suspect have harbored or aided anyone.

For them to maintain control over just the Ukranian people it would have to go far beyond anything we have seen, based on the determined resistance we have seen so far.

If they take control, put in a government and the situation continues, then whose to say when sanctions drop? When the EU wants gas? When a flight to China takes 8 hours extra? When the middle east needs wheat? Depends on if China and India comes into bat for them and gives the a lifeline.

We haven’t seen how the Ukrainians would react with a massive occupying force on its territory

Huge assumptions made throughout your post based on the last few days alone
