Really not in tune with this. Is India or Pakistan supported by Russia in this. I know, everyday a schoolday. Why tf can we not just live in peace?
Russia doesn't really have a dog in that hunt. China is also in that game, claiming some of the dirt as a consequence of cutting a deal with Pakistan.

Anyway, if India is sitting out a vote regarding the conquest of territory, it's because they would like to lance the festering sore on their northeastern border. The UAE has a longstanding dispute with the Saudis over the disposition of the stretch of coastline in between their present borders and Qatar. The standard story is that the Saudis rooked the UAE on a deal settling the matter by saying one thing and writing another into the actual document.

China's laundry list of territorial disputes is, of course, impressive. These are driven by their resentment of the provisions of the Unequal Treaties (eg: why Vladivostok is Russian rather than Chinese) as well as their desire to extend their maritime sway into the South China Sea and seize the fossil fuel deposits located there.

This is why these countries would sit out a vote which is at least ostensibly about settling a territorial dispute via the use of force. China's increasingly close (but never trusting) relationship with the Russians also has a lot to do with the way they are voting.

Thanks mate. Still not clear why India abstained.

Because, given a pretext, they will kick the snot out of Pakistan and ask the world to recognize that the dirt in question (more on their extreme northern border, really) is theirs by virtue of the treaty that partitioned India.

They're not likely to vote in favor of condemning another state's use of force over claims to territory, or recognition of disputed territory, as a consequence.

Territorial disputes are a lot more common than you might think, as is low-level use of force regarding them. As an example, the US and Canada have a bunch of active disputes, and fishermen from the two countries have exchanged potshots over fishing rights.

This appears to be happening because sanctions on potassium exports, spearheaded by the United States and those elements of the Lithuanian government opposed to Lukashenko, shoved Lukashenko even more firmly into the arms of Putin.

He doesn't have a lot of options because the sale of potassium represents a big chunk of his exports and the principal source of foreign exchange for the country. If he can't get it out through Lithuania or Gdansk, Russia is the only other regional alternative.

This has implications for global food production, but the other big exporter is Canada so the United States is in a geopolitical position where it doesn't have to care.
