Never quite clear to me. Is/was Putin wanting to take over the whole of the Ukraine or only the Russian speaking and culture Eastern provinces of Ukraine.

Think that if Trump was still in power this could have escalated quite quickly.

Although Putin probably wouldn't have postured so much.

Also think Putin has increased his personal fortune with all this. Markets going crazy and he would know exactly when to time everything.

My guess is totally control the Eastern side either as separate states or as part of a very compliant Ukraine.

I would expect a land route to Crimea to be created. If he was a total bar steward he'd probably go all the way to Kherson which would really give a Black Sea presence and ensure that he could take Ukraine if he wanted and Belarus wasn't being as amenable to Russia as they are now.

My partner is originally from Odessa and her family/friends who live there don't seem to think an invasion is imminent.

If they do invade I'd imagine there wouldn't be a great deal of resistance due to the cultural and ethnic similarities of both the Russian and Ukrainian people. Could be wrong though.

He’s denied any plan to invade though, so if he manages to get enough of his political objectives met via diplomacy, then let’s hope he feels can still walk away from it and save face.

I mean he de-escalated Putin once before and North Korea when they were threatening to launch nukes.

Not by NATO no, but if Ukraine can concede plans to ever join NATO/EU, then that might be enough for him to back down. His other objective of removing all NATO forces from the new NATO nations can’t ever happen though, he’ll have to concede that one.
