What is it with Russia always seemingly wanting to be at war ?? Why can’t they just live peacefully ffs

Because ever since the breakup of the Soviet Union, and saw their former socialist neighbours turn westward, they worry that influence will spread to their own population. They have to frame the West/EU/NATO as an adversary, and it's a very strong one at that.

Think it goes back further to be honest, Don’t think they’ve been a stable country in my lifetime anyway and that’s nearing 50 years give a year or 4

For how much longer can Russia afford to maintain its military capabilities? It's crazy that a country with an economy half the size of the UK's thinks that it is wise to waste what little financial resources it has on such a large military, rather than using those resources to improve the lives of its citizens.

We're seeing Russia slowly shrink before us - they're becoming a bloated version of North Korea, hiding behind an oversized military, thinking it makes them relevant.

Oh yeah for sure you're right... the west never had to build a wall to keep their people from fleeing. But since you said "Russia" I presumed post soviet break-up.

It's always been governed by a dictatorship, [Poor language removed] scared of being overthrown. Hence the historical "little man syndrome" foreign policy.

Unfortunately for Russia, its geography ties its hand into huge military spending to ensure its security. This video explains it well:

That was quality - cheers.

It makes sense having watched that why we see so much chest-beating from Russia - trying to remain relevant clearly matters to them. I didn't realise just how insignificant they actually are (aside from size and having a load of nukes, of course).

Another good watch, specific to the geopolitics behind the current crisis in Ukraine is this one:

Not sure why the bemusement over potential invasion on the part of the Ukraine leader - these 2 countries have been at war for 8 years now.

Putin looks like he is a bit paranoid these days

You've nailed it. If Russia was an actual democracy abiding peaceably with its neighbours and the rest of the world, it would profit massively and who'd actually want to invade it?

Stop the kleptocrats in charge from being able to prodit, and get the Russian people on side.

The only ones who think Russia will be invaded, are The Kremlin. (And they secretly know it).

It’s a tough one to get the Russian people onside.

They are aware of the size of their country compared to the EU. Additionally they look down on former satellite states as beneath them.

While most people don’t particularly like Putin and are confused by the potential Ukraine intervention, apparently only 4% of people believe Russia would be to blame for any war.

So when it comes to deep questions of the nature of patriotism things become a lot more difficult to assess.

I don't think it's a case of them being fearful of a specific invasion of the Russian heartland.

Well if Russia became a proper democracy with all of the freedoms that go with it, then Putins rule would be threatened from within Russia, instead of influence from outside. That's all his military spending and aggressive foreign policy is about...self preservation of an iron fisted dictator.

An invasion of the Russian heartland by anybody is essentially unthinkable, since their nuclear deterrent will always be there.

Reports coming in that many Russian BTG staging areas are now empty with troops and equipment forward deployed to assault positions.

A lot of reports of airborne assault forces on the move with a significant increase in the number of assault and transport helicopters deployed very close to the border along with their fuel depots.

I think all the pieces are now in place - now let’s see how the diplomats do in the next 36 hours.
