The NATO treaty includes a mutual defence clause and includes non-European countries in the North Atlantic region

The Treaty of the European Union, does include a mutual defence clause within it, so non-NATO members that are EU members would be obligated to assist any member invaded

They are two parallel and binding treaties that are in position.

Edit. The EU's mutual defence provisions were added later, in the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007


Obviously this is simply in addition to any NATO obligations that NATO members have and/or includes non-NATO members that are EU members etc etc etc @Mutzo Nutzo
If that's the case,why do the UK and France have independent nuclear weapons?
