Russia Pressing Men In Occupied Areas Of Ukraine Into Fight Against Ukrainian Forces

The Russian-installed leadership of Crimea has said that the mobilization ordered by Moscow of the Ukrainian region that Russia occupied and annexed in 2014 would be complete by the end of the day, increasing fears of forced military service particularly of minority Crimean Tatars under occupation.

Oh certainly in the occupied territories it's been happening. I didn't know you considered them Russia now. Actually I don't see Crimea ever going back to Ukraine - we're closer to all out nuclear war than we are than Ukraine retaking Crimea.

It's also probably happening in some non-metropolitan areas especially in the south and east. If it's starting to happen in Moscow and St Petersburg or the major cities then this will be out in the open and everyone will know about. I will ask Mrs Yarrrgh if she has heard anything from her friends there. I suspect that it's misinformation as it was about the tales of large scale press ganging in the Ukraine a short time ago.

The stories maybe linked to the fact that for the first time since the war started Muscovites are now receiving military summons through the state services web portal. As the spring draft is underway (ages 18-27) there maybe some opposition among the younger elements to being called up and not reporting to their draft stations as ordered.

It was happening and reported as happening in the DPR and LPR after 2014.

Well I wouldn't blame them at all. If enough are refusing to fight and die in Putin's land grab is an act of defiance that would bring this war to an end and push Putin out the window once and for all.

Until the colonies break free from the Kremlin they will sadly be controlled by the empire.

I am not sure that nuclear war would be allowed, regardless of how insane politicians can be. Even Putin knows that going nuclear results in his beloved homeland being vaporised, same in the west. They will be lots of threats from Putin, no doubt as his MO is to exploit fear and weakness, but I reckon he'd get a bullet if those around him thought his insanity would lead to their end.

I think its a telling marker - in that the war is now becoming relevant to somewhat wealthy Muscovite's. Prior to this the war was being fought with mainly poor ethnic Russians (Buryat's, Tartars, Altay's etc...). The expansion of the draft to include Moscow, and St Pete's tells its own story.

My father once observed that Jim Mattis probably gave orders to the guys with the nuclear football, indicating if Trump requested it he was to die by cerebral hemorrhage on the spot.

Putin's case is a little more frightening. He retains power in part because no one in his orbit has the clout to shield a spear-carrier from consequences, and no one else near him has a gun.

They were a cunning people long before Putin was born and will be long after he is dead. I think he knows this.

It’s in nobody’s interests, not even Putin’s to have a nuclear war. However, the concerning thing is whether he gambles on a demonstrative nuclear test to try to get the west to back down.

If they do back down, it sets a dangerous precedent. If they don’t well we’re on the escalation ladder potentially. Of course China might then withdraw their support for Russia and Putin would be in a pretty bad position.
