Slightly worrying that both sides have reported an attack leading to the destruction of a Russian ICBM detection unit. Could it be a mistake by Ukraine thinking it was being used for another purpose or a target that the US gave them.

I doubt a target that far into Russian territory is a mistake.

It was an SHF site (super high freq radar) so its actual detection range is low. Its role would have been to detect SRBM launches as well as drones and cruise missiles, although it would have been integrated into a much larger Russian EW detection system.

You could argue that the s-300/s-400 systems also form part of the same early warning detection umbrella and Ukraine has been knocking these systems out since the war started.

In summary it was a military site and therefore a legitimate target.

True but it's of no strategic value to Ukraine, which makes you wonder.
Well it would cover the Crimean peninsula... just.

It does also cover Israel and Iran so there is scope there for the conspiracy theorists.

However taking out a nuke detection facility is likely also a tit for tat type action if Russia is doing tactical nuclear drills on its western borders.

As ever, we shall see what we shall see.

This site.

Think you'll find that the installations for tracking incoming drones and missiles from Ukraine are the 300 and 400 which are mobile. Ukraine destroyed one of those around the same time. This one is specifically for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Hence it's a concrete fixed structure. We know the Russians are dumb but to use immovable and un-camouflaged 300 or 400 system...It would be like Ukraine putting Patriots in farm houses in the middle of fields.🙄

The following is a quote from the twz article which is the most concerning thing for me:

" "The conditions specifying the possibility of nuclear weapons use by the Russian Federation" include any "attack by [an] adversary against critical governmental or military sites of the Russian Federation, disruption of which would undermine nuclear forces response actions," according to the Basic Principles of State Policy of the Russian Federation on Nuclear Deterrence the Kremlin put out two years ago."

This now legitimises the use of nuclear weapons from a Russian perspective. I don't think that they will but it's increasingly becoming more possible an option.

If the strike was sanctioned by the west (US) then it is a big warning shot. If it was carried out independently by Ukraine, then they are playing with fire and potentially will be facing receiving shorter ranged weapons or defensive ones or even losing support.

One outcome from this might be a peace deal becomes more likely which might be timely as it's starting to warm up with Taiwan and the west can't support Taiwan, Israel and Ukraine at its current capacity.

'Interesting' times ahead.

That radar site they hit has the capability to detect drones, cruise missiles and SRBM’s all of which Ukraine is currently lobbing at Russia. Currently Biden’s administration does not allow US supplied weapons to target sites within Russia so this attack would’ve been made with Ukranian weapons.

I did note yesterday that the US re-emphasised that any nuclear launch or “inadvertent”incident involving nukes would result in the U.S. striking all Russian ground and air forces based in occupied Ukraine and Crimea.

Maybe Zelensky is starting to poke the bear?

If the US got involved to that extent, say goodnight.
