Interesting report in the NY Times:

Ukraine’s government opened a forum for international weapons manufacturers on Friday, encouraging them to see a business opportunity in reviving Ukraine’s domestic arms industry in ways that would diminish the country’s reliance on military aid.

Ukraine will still need Western weapons to defend and attack along the vast front line in the current phase of the war, and perhaps for years to come, as its military swaps its arsenal of Soviet-legacy armored vehicles, howitzers and airplanes for American and European weapons.

Some of the challenges of ramping up domestic production were evident in the conference itself: Intended to promote investment opportunities to a broad audience of weapons makers, it was also held at a venue whose location could not be disclosed, for security reasons.

I’m honestly disgusted reading the gloating from them whenever it transpires Russia have got a gain or stopped a counterattack.

Pulling out numbers with glee showing Ukrainian soldiers (who are obviously protecting their freedom) death counts and then using the illegal invasion of Iraq to tell people they can’t have an opinion, like it was us who decided we should.

I honestly don’t think there’s a place for it on this forum in any capacity bar them two having a private conversation where they can tug each other off over Bradley and Challenger losses.

I’m all for sensible discord and opposing views, but when they’re actively using the deaths of people fighting for their existence and those of their fellow countrymen it’s a push too far. We wouldn’t laugh at Iraqi civilians being tortured, I was horrified when I saw the Abu Ghraib photos, I’m appalled about Guantanamo Bay, it makes me sick to think of all the innocent men, women and children who lost their lives due to two arseholes who lied their way in to an invasion. These two though absolutely love it. Sad.

They're both clearly extremely unpleasant people in a lot of ways - but my point is that it's better that they reveal their views in public so we're aware of it. The alternative is they both end up on some deeply unpleasant alt-right forums that act as northing more than echo chambers.

You just need to take it for what it is - two largely unintelligent men spouting ill-informed bile on the internet.

Everyone is going to be doing that dave, even us (somewhat belatedly).

I disagree though that they'll be just licencing "Western" weapons systems mind, its much more likely they will go down the Israeli route and develop their own systems (albeit operating to western standards, eg 155mm / 5.56mm etc) amongst a heavily militarized populace. Gun nuts will probably see it as some sort of paradise, every man and woman with their rifle on the wall at home etc etc.
