This just in: Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian president Vladimir Putin are discussing a place and time to hold talks, according to a spokesperson for Zelenskiy.

The spokesperson also added that Ukraine is ready to talk about peace and a possible ceasefire, Reuters further reported.

Earlier today, the US State department cast doubts about whether Russia had legitimate plans for diplomacy, saying that Russia must stop bombing Ukraine first.

“Now we see Moscow suggesting that diplomacy take place at the barrel of a gun, or as Moscow’s rockets, mortars, artillery target the Ukrainian people,” said State department spokesperson Ned Price. “This is not real diplomacy. Those are not the conditions for real diplomacy.”

I hope that the fighting ends. That Ukraine keeps some semblance of autonomy and there are no long term recriminations in the population.

The long term aim is to ensure that Russia returns to the fold and conditions for any new Putins to arise never arise.

Putin has acted horrendously here but get the Russians out of Ukraine and go from there. If they withdraw it's a start and at this point it's probably one of the best possible outcomes.

The whole civilised world should stand with Ukraine. It doesn't matter who is saying what, there is no 100% truth in the war, of course.

But the fault is always on aggressor's side. ALWAYS. Russia is the aggresor here and Putin's regime has innocent blood of civilians on its hands.

Russia is a country with so many possibilities, resources, fantastic sportsmen, genious art (I think that Russian cinematography beats Hollywood comfortably and probably is the best in the world), great scientists and many others. They should be flying to the Mars or looking for a cure for the cancer. And instead Russian politics has always been barbaric, offensive and inhuman. Instead of focusing on growth and development they choose the path of war and destruction. Putin will be remembered as a war criminal when he is gone.

What a utter waste of potential.

They’ll retain autonomy but they’ll need to renounce any hope of nato, and eu and recognition of donbass as independent states (they have to as Russia has recognised them as such and could otherwise always be called in to help fight)

Putin is richer than anyone on the planet, he wants to go down in history as some form of Peter the Great, but unfortunately he is being compared with Hitler and Stalin and he can see the writing on the wall. No one has an issue with the Russian people, just Putin and his mates. Directing condemnation and war crime accusations directly at him will hurt his ego. He is on a hiding to nothing at the moment. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, his time is over…..
