I’ve made the point that I believe that a nuclear attack on a non nato country - and maybe even on a nato country not named the USA - would not result in direct retaliation against the country that fired the missile.

The west is run by oligarchs not by idealogues, and for oligarchs preservation of their capital and their own personal safety is paramount. This isn’t the 70s or 80s any more.

MAD only really comes into play if Washington or New York are nuked imo.

Having said that I believe lip service is being paid to it which is why Russia will never be removed from Ukraine.

If a nuclear attack was made on the U.K. or France, Russia would disappear…..nothing even to do with the USA…..you may need to rethink your stance here…

It hasn’t declared use of nukes if an ally is attacked.

No, it says they will reserve the right to use a nuclear response to the use of nuclear weapons or other WMDs against itself and/or its allies.

The sliding scale is about what the attack is, not so much whether they CBA to respond to it.

For example, a poison gas attack on the Metro by a terrorist group backed by the Georgian government probably would not get a nuclear response (it would absolutely get a response of course); wheras a nuclear attack on Minsk by a hostile government almost certainly would get a nuclear response.

The response would almost certainly be limited - they would not fire everything off in one go - but it would be proportionate to the attack.

Well Ukraine landed and attacked in Crimea yesterday, the front line goes back yard by yard against Russia each day, the portions of Ukraine that Russia said were now Russia are a lot smaller and this is even before Ukraine gets the Aircraft from the West…or do you somehow think Russia is winning this war…….

I don’t think they see these pin pricks as serious enough to warrant a nuclear response. And they’d be right.

But I agree the ‘idea’ of mad is probably why we have a stalemate right now.
