Here's my opinion. Russia has been trying to claw back its lost territories for many years now, Georgia and Crimea being two examples. Putin sees this as strengthening their security from, in his eyes, the slowly advancing reach of Nato to the borders of Russia. There are other reasons, such as energy (there are huge gas resources in certain parts of Ukraine) and a dwindling Russian birth rate. Putin won't stop and despite our well-intentioned media propaganda always reporting on Ukraine's successes and Russian failures the war is still weighted in Putin's favour. Some Western countries have given a lot to help Ukraine, in terms of weapons and training, because they fear what Putin's plans are should he succeed in Ukraine. They know that even if Putin is stalled he will wait, regroup, rebuild his military stocks, and then go again. He doesn't understand the concept of failure. It will always be 'whatever it takes.' The best we can hope for right now is for continuous help from the West in order to stall Putin's advances. The longer it goes on Russia's supplies will dwindle and they will have to think about a prolonged ceasefire so they can, as I've mentioned re-surplus. This can take a while but be sure they'll be back. Russia's leaders have no problem sending many young men to their death but they understand that continuous mandatory conscriptions will sap the morale of the general population. It's not a good look for a country to be continually bringing back body bags. You can only keep this type of news buried for so long before there are protests. Propaganda can only carry you so far. I do see this war going on for years in a stop/start fashion. The overriding problem here is would be if Putin does eventually win because I believe he will not want to stop. It may be not for another few years but you can be sure he will continue. So what do we do in this scenario? Nobody knows the answer to that right now. It just makes me sick to the stomach that all these young men have to die on both sides because a little old man thinks it's the right thing to do. How many of the sons of Russia's top brass are fighting on the front line? I'm guessing not many. They are usually experiencing the finest education the West's Universities can offer, though eh!
