As crazy as it sounds, from my understanding the atomic bombs probably saved lives. The red army were about to launch a massive ground assault on Japan and the US would have had to confront them somewhere in the middle. The Japanese losses would have been devastating fighting on two fronts. The bombs proved it was futile to resist and prevented the Russians getting involved.

Look at the casualty rates at Okinawa and Io Jima as well for a glimpse at how devastating that conflict would have been on both sides.

I just find it astonishing that there's a lever we can easily pull that will have hugely damaging effects on the Russian economy and we've got some leaders sitting around saying "ooh that's a bit drastic" - as tanks roll in on Kiev. Mental.

Getting more depressing my the minute this. What an absolute catastrophic few years this has been. Many more coming up it seems.

Yes, I'm of an age where a lot of things that were fairly certain and felt stable are falling apart. I'm sure older posters have lived through similar, but it's pretty unsettling. It probably sounds niaive, but it is so easy to take things for granted. Then all of a sudden...

And I say that from a position of relative safety and comfort. The poor souls on the ground in Ukraine really do have their world about to be pulled apart.
