In Estonia national service has been a thing for a long time, and they recently modified it so that people with an interest in IT can join the cyber defence part of the military.
In Estonia vocational IT students can pass military service in the Cyber Command Forces as part of cybersecurity education.

I know the people behind this and they say the scheme works well and has helped address the skills shortage in cybersecurity more broadly in the country. Finland operates a similar scheme, which given that they routinely top both the PISA education rankings and the global happiness index doesn't quite paint the picture of childhoods being destroyed.
Obviously if the Tories are in charge then it's almost certain to be ballsed up, but still, the apparent hysteria does seem somewhat over the top and I hope we're not going to have another 6 weeks of this.
