It is utter madness! Have they even considered some of the implications?

How does an 18 year old hold down any weekend job to pay for their education for the rest of the week if they have to volunteer one weekend in 4? Or are they all just meant to bolunteer for a year in a war zone (any pay/healthcare/pension for any injuries suffered?)

What is the impact on the economy by taking them out of it (let alone what the back of a cig packet estimated cost of 2.5billion could instead be spent on? Or on military readiness?

What hapoens if you are pregnant- do you get a deferment and if so how long for - who are you meant to leave your kid with?

Has Sunak got a really bad headcold from that downpour and is now on strong meds that is making him delirious?!

This is what Socretes had to say about the youth when he was contemplating his thoughts.

"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise"...

Don't know where they are going to billet tens of thousands of 18 years old, let the people to train/mentor these youngsters, factor in the cost of it with promised tax cuts from Hunt, really is for the proper Tory thickos.

And I really do wonder what an earth is going on in Tory HQ. On the day Starmer announces potential votes for 16/17 year olds, and the Tory Old Guard inevitably mobilise to denounce it, Sunak then undermines them by announcing a policy that totally legitimises why 16/17 year olds should get the vote!

There’ll be many in the country, with an age bracket of 40+, who will like the sound of this announcement regardless of its credibility.
Was reading some stats on age grouping last night it has significantly changed you have to get to 70 plus to see any Tory advantages. Hence the huge leads in polls for Labour.

It's funny how they don't have money for the homeless, schools, NHS, army veterans, national infrastructure, the environment etc etc. But whenever they have some batsh*it crazy idea like this (and Rwanda etc) or for shoveling public funds into their own pockets, they suddenly do. Party of fiscal responsibility my arse.

How the hell are they going to pay for it. Where are all these kids going to go? We're suddenly going to start building loads of new army buildings? We don't even have enough prison places to deal with all convictions at the moment. But oh no, that's not a problem is it, let's prioritise building new army bases for our kids.

The forces find it difficult to train kids that already want to be there nevermind ones that don't. And who's going to train them?

As for the community element. They're now willing to take millions of young people out of their local economies? Those that work weekends and those who want to spend their money? Again, where's the money for that? And where are we going to get additional staff to work the weekends they're away?

Jesus wept.

While I don't like the thought of mandatory 2 year NS being made a legal requirement, there is a possibility that something needs to be done given the precarious state of the world at the moment. A million or so 'reserve' troops who are trained would act as a deterrent if nothing else. If something kicks off in 10 years time it's not like we didn't see the warning signs coming so doing nothing and hoping it doesn't isn't a real option.

I would like it to be shorter, perhaps take in vocational education at the same time, lose the hand to hand/knife combat and kill or be killed mentality training elements, as we don't want to have thousands of young men who can take people apart in a pub fight.

At the end of it they would have the ability to take apart and fire guns, work tanks and other heavy machinery, with maintenance and servicing knowledge, fly drones and so on. They'd come out with a vocation certificate, hopefully an understanding of the importance of exercise, good diet and discipline. If they could handsomely paid (for a teenager) for a positive experience that someone would actually like to do then it could be beneficial to all. If called up (hopefully volunteered) they could have the refresher and combat training and they would be ready to go in the fastest possible time frame.

The issue is they probably won't do any of that so it will just be standard recruit training and I'm not up for that. As with any idea it's all in the detail and execution.

I get the impression that the Con's realise their goose is cooked and are intent on dragging the debate as far right as possible for their donor's long term interests. Unfortunately ten-man Starmer's response is to give his nearest front bencher his beer and get stuck in for his backers.
Hopefully there are going to be some good independent wins because Starmer having a stonking majority is going to be another Johnson poo-show. Get Brexit Done Get Tories Out.
