TV Series

We finished it now. 7/10
The whole series is very well thought out and put together tho' a lot of scenes did feel quite stagey. There's a dollop of standard scares, poor CGI and cliched emotional 'human' moments, but the slow burn of the story was engaging, the atmosphere & tension were well done, the actors were good, the sparse use of music welcome, and props to the camera work too.
Highlight: Episode 6's impressive long take scenes.
Lowlight: The ending was somewhat cheese.

Not recommended if you want more focus on the supernatural than on family drama.
This is why I binned it after E4

Any recommendations of series which do focus on the supernatural and not so much on soapy family drama?

Episode 5 and 6 are grouse. Id finish it after those.

I do understand why they took that direction but it doesnt make it any less monolog’ey.

I agree Eps 5 & 6 are the strongest, but if the previous 4 eps weren't enjoyed I don't think 5 or 6 will change that impression much.

We did enjoy it, for what it's worth, but like Stranger Things which also scored from me a 7/10 it does seem a little overhyped.

Got a spare couple of hours tonight so gonna give this House on Haunted Hill a go. Is it actually scary or more unsettling/eerie?

Not scary, scenes in the house are a bit eerie. I enjoyed them the most, they did a good job with Hill House. There are some disturbing ideas and scenes which will make you go a little wow.

The series has standard jump scares (all quiet, then a sudden loud FX sound effect combined with sudden appearance of creepy thing). Tho' it sometimes slightly changes the formula in that some of them come out of nowhere. They're relatively rare. The most cliched one is at the end of Ep1 one (and this trick is repeated a few times over the season) is that
a main character sees someone who shouldn't be there, then that someone's face goes all CGI-ghostzombie like and screams...seen it a thousand times before

CGI horror I generally don't find scary or unsettling...looks too cartoony. In a cartoony environment, like a computer game, it will work as your suspension of disbelief is anchored in that look, but in a live-action drama series to suddenly see obvious computer graphics does take you out the atmosphere a little. Good-quality model work is easily superior, but productions can't be arsed to do those anymore. Shame, as from cost-perspective model work isn't necessarily more expensive than CGI.

On episode 3 of haunting of hill house. I've been a nervous wreck every time I've watched. Some of the stuff is really freaky and messes with your head. Good luck.
It has the added benefit of getting rid of the missus...I can't watch that its too spooky, gives me a rest from whys he/she doing that,(stfu and pay attention woman) when you're trying to listen

Finished Haunting of Hill House. It turned out to be more of a family trauma series than a “horror” series. Still left with a few questions though.

You’ve got to really sit and concentrate on it though as the constant switching between timelines can get a little confusing.

I'm going to put this out there and will probably have to fight off the backlash but.....

The Cry

There I said it. If you don't know what its about, watch it. A Brutal Crime Thriller which had me wanting to take my TV outside and drive over it for showing me such dark dark images. I would thoroughly recommend it if you enjoyed Killing Eve.

I enjoyed it, nice to have a drama which wasn't like The Bodyguard et al.
