Troy Deeney

Morning guys,

Take it from me, the time for Watford to sell Deeney has been and gone. We turned down £30m from Leicester not that long ago...he’s worth nowhere near that much to us in a footballing sense. But he’s kinda stitched into the fabric of the club as a captain that kept it all together when we swapping managers galore etc. His value in the changing room and around the squad is why we keep him. He’s building a school with his foundation in the area, so couple that with his age and I’d be surprised if he went anywhere. He’s a very useful player on his day but he’s had to accept he’s a squad player really now. With your money, you should be aiming higher. But if you insist on taking a striker from us, Okaka would be more suited to you. He’s the one we are likely selling to be replaced with Slimani - who Silva has wanted ever since he arrived at us. If you’d got Silva from us, could guarantee he’d be who you would sign.

Deeney has been patchy this season - mainly because he missed the whole of pre-season injured, has had to compete with a striker we signed for £18m (!!! Which was crazy, I agree...) and has had a 3 game ban. He’s now much more of a striker who is there to assist, which he does very well, and score about 10 a season (inc pens). That does for us as a secondary striker. Not what you need a main guy I doubt.

Can see why BFS would be after him but I’d say it’s extremely unlikely. Wouldn’t shock me if you went for Vardy to be honest....

EDIT: That’s not me saying you should sign Okaka or that you may think he is or isn’t for you. Just if you were after one of our strikers hypothetically, that’s who you should take...

There are plenty who would give us 10M for Niasse or 5M for Sandro!

I think you are getting a bit weirdly defensive here! I never said we should sell them or that we should be loads for Deeney! All I am saying is he aint a bad player. He is decent.
Sorry pal. Perhaps I didn't explain it very well, but you are clearly missing the point.

I never accused you of saying we should sell Niasse, Sandro or DCL - it's simply my opinion that if we are going to bring in a senior striker on a permanent transfer then one of them, possibly two, will see their playing time reduced to nothing. There is no point having a senior player sitting there doing nothing and getting paid a wage, and losing value in the process; equally the player/s concerned will probably agitate for a move. In those circumstances, you don't tend to get a decent fee when you sell. Buying Deeney will bring about this situation however, and we'd have to pay a big fee to get him. He's not worth a big fee in the first place, and it would end up with us losing Niasse or Sandro at a minimal profit, despite both of them having a bigger upside than Deeney.

He's not a good player. He's one-dimensional, albeit quite effective in that one-dimension. However he's going to be prone to more injuries now due to his age, physique and his career-long conditioning/fitness issues, so his likely career longevity is poor. Something we continue to do badly as a club is over-estimate how much mileage older players have left in them (Distin, Jagielka, Williams, Baines, Kone et al) and I fear Deeney falls squarely in this category.

If we had a choice of paying a £5m loan fee for Giroud or £10m on a permanent transfer for Deeney, I'd want Giroud.... and Watford aren't going to let Deeney go for £10m, are they!

Stacey's back. First may I say Sam Allardyce...... that's so funny. A young forward thinking manager which you all hoped for alas he is not - prehistoric maybe!
Marco Silva stays with us as I told you all he would - the price was £50m which was basically telling you lot to take a trot as he was never available.
The arrogance of you lot with comments like Marco welcome to Goodison and so forth looking back is so funny.
Yes we have the next big thing as our manager and I have no doubt that we will only have him for 2 season although when he does leave it will be to a current big team and not a clapped out former biggish club from yesterday.
Now you want our tallisman and captain Troy Deeney, with similar arrogant remarks within this thread we've already turned down £30m for him last summer. Bang on about it if you like, we don't care as we know it won't happen and you going to end up looking just as silly as you have with you pursuit of Marco. Oh and finally come May have safe trips to your respective GP's with your sore necks from watching Sam's 'modern' football!
Hi Stace, how is your wonder season going compared to our car crash season, last time I checked 4 points difference?

As for your next big thing manager, enjoy him for the remainder of the season, you might just sneak in at 10th if your lucky, just before we get him for free this summer.

Take care Stace.

Thanks for the input mate!

I think (as with Silva) a lot will depend on whether Watford would let Deeney go. He doesn't seem suited to Silvas style, as he's not mobile enough. I also think he's been a fantastic servant for you guys, and a pretty big character, so if he knocked on the door of your board and said he wanted a last payday/opportunity to start regularly there is a decent chance they would consider that?

The fee might be important. I've seen Watford would be looking towards 25 million. I'm sure Everton are happier at 15 and meeting somewhere in the middle (towards Watfords end) of it happened.

I really like Deeney. I think because he's a thick set lad and doesn't look the brightest people underestimate his intelligence on the football pitch. I always thought he'd be a fantastic foil for Lukaku and is a great second striker who makes others around him look better. He once dominated Liverpool and Souness said "he's more than just a big lump". I can see why people wouldn't be happy, but for me if it could be done, at a sensible fee I would be in favour.

Im afraid to tell you we will probably get Slimani mate, can see him coming here January.

Well if you don't think he is a good player then its not really worth discussing is it?

I don't really get why you are telling me about Niasse and Sandro? Or Giroud come to think of it. It's not relevant to anything I have said.

I am merely saying that Deeney is a better player than some of you are giving him credit for. I rate him somewhat highly and would not object to us getting him. This does not mean I want us to get him not does it suggest I think he is a world beater!

I think he is an alright player and some of you seem to have him in the same bracket as Brett Angell or someone that's all!

It is. Your main striker and penalty taker should be getting more than a goal every four games.

Either way, is that the standard required to play up front for Everton these days? Just don't be awful? I'd rather see us sign someone whose goalscoring record is at least decent.

Well, wouldn't we all?

Why didn't you take the chance to correct your lies that I put to you on your return you little coward?

As for what you've said, the price was never 50 million. Where is the charge against Everton you promised (or lied about?). Where's Alan Pardew as our manager?

I think you owe everyone an apology for being proven categorically wrong.

It's completely relevant. The context is "will we look to bring in a striker in January? If so, who?"... hopefully we won't be stupid enough to pay £20m for a fat, injured 29 year old who is less effective at scoring than Niasse, and less effective at assisting than DCL. Because we already have Niasse and DCL.

For the record I would say he is a better player than Brett Angell. But that's not the standard required when looking at who we should try to bring in to strengthen our options up front in January.

I am a little confused by your comment:
I rate him somewhat highly and would not object to us getting him. This does not mean I want us to get him

But as you rightly point out, it's not really worth further discussion. You rate him and I don't, and neither of us are going to change our minds.

I’ll get him/her to apologise when @davek says sorry for all his missed deadlines over Silva...:D
