Troy Deeney

It's completely relevant. The context is "will we look to bring in a striker in January? If so, who?"... hopefully we won't be stupid enough to pay £20m for a fat, injured 29 year old who is less effective at scoring than Niasse, and less effective at assisting than DCL. Because we already have Niasse and DCL.

For the record I would say he is a better player than Brett Angell. But that's not the standard required when looking at who we should try to bring in to strengthen our options up front in January.

I am a little confused by your comment:

But as you rightly point out, it's not really worth further discussion. You rate him and I don't, and neither of us are going to change our minds.

Its not really relevant as I wasn't saying we should sign him! You say less effective than Niasse and Deeney at scoring/assisting, what are you basing that on? He has never played for us so unless he does you couldnt possibly know that....

I don't think its that confusing. Basically I am not advocating we sign him but if we did and certainly as a squad man I think we could do worse as I think he is alright and has his uses. That's all!

Thanks for the input mate!

I think (as with Silva) a lot will depend on whether Watford would let Deeney go. He doesn't seem suited to Silvas style, as he's not mobile enough. I also think he's been a fantastic servant for you guys, and a pretty big character, so if he knocked on the door of your board and said he wanted a last payday/opportunity to start regularly there is a decent chance they would consider that?

The fee might be important. I've seen Watford would be looking towards 25 million. I'm sure Everton are happier at 15 and meeting somewhere in the middle (towards Watfords end) of it happened.

I really like Deeney. I think because he's a thick set lad and doesn't look the brightest people underestimate his intelligence on the football pitch. I always thought he'd be a fantastic foil for Lukaku and is a great second striker who makes others around him look better. He once dominated Liverpool and Souness said "he's more than just a big lump". I can see why people wouldn't be happy, but for me if it could be done, at a sensible fee I would be in favour.
Make no mistake, if Deeney asked to leave, he has built up more than enough credit with the club to be allowed to go with the club’s blessing. Personally I think he’ll see out his existing deal and then it may be a case of 1yr deals until he is no longer up to PL football and then he’ll join his beloved Birmingham City and see out his career. He’s a die-hard blue with tattoos of the club and everything.

Deeney is perfect for us as a Plan B and occasionally as a Plan A. He allows us to play two different ways. He’s nowhere near as bad as some make out. It’s a bit lazy to say he’s fat and only scores penalties as he does much more than that, believe me. And he’s not fat or injury prone. Sure he’s big but (and you’ll have to excuse the link to the other club in your city) he’s similar to John Barnes in that way. Looks big but it’s not fat and what he does with his size, is far more effective than similar players with the same size attributes. He’s extremely good in the air in terms of flick on’s and is rarely beaten. And he holds the ball up and brings attacking-mids very well too. He’s a counter-attacking managers dream. I suspect, that isn’t Allardyce.

If he was 25 and reasonably priced, he’d be a great option for you. But he isn’t 25 and I doubt he’s reasonably priced in your eyes and that’s fair enough.

But to @Tree13 - I watch him week in, week out. He is a good player. Perhaps just not the player for you. But to claim he has physique or conditioning issues or is injury prone, simply isn’t true.

We need to stop focusing on targets that were mentioned when RK was in charge. Allyrdyce will have his own list of players he would like to sign, same as any other manager, the truth is that we have no idea who he would like to sign or how much he has to spend... I think he may be after someone like Dembele at Celtic rather than Troy Deeney but really we have no idea.

I agree with most of that mate.

The only bit I would question is why would he want to stay getting 1 year deals as second fiddle if he gets the chance to maybe get a longer term deal at another club and be first choice? Do you know how long he has to run on his deal?

The fee will likely be the sticking point. However seeing how we have negotiated re Pickford, Keane and Sigurdsson we have been prepared to offer big fees for domestic players!

The thing is mate he's linked again now. By all accounts Koeman kaiboshed the idea whereas Sam is keen.

Walsh tried to sign him for Leicester, and Shakespeare tried to sign him too. Allardyce likes him. I can see there being interest.

My uncle is a Watford STH and says the opposite to you. But to be fair, we could ask fifty different people and we'd probably get fifty different answers - such is the nature of opinions.

I would rather see us loan Giroud in January, and buy Dembele from Celtic in the summer. I just don't see Deeney as a solution to our particular needs.

Simeone......please! If you ever thought we had a chance of him as mananger your as deluded as our friends across the park who believe the'll win the Prem this season.
I never believed for a second we were getting him. it's just that the scale and range of strategy and ambition is crazy - we are all over the place with targets. It's like scattergun tactics, just try anything see what sticks. or try the best and then settle for the lowest common denominator.

If we signed this grock, I`d say that @matty1878 had been pretty much validated in his stance.
I wouldn't hold your breath for us to sign anybody better.Nothing to do with Sam being manager.Koeman it could be argued was a bigger drawn, yet couldn't get those two Prem success stories Perez and Gabbiadino over the line and Giroud would rather get splinters than join us.Lets be honest we aren't a club who can expect top signings anymore no matter how much money we allegedly have backing us.The best we can expect is players who can do a specific job.Sad to say Deeney falls into this catagory.Be prepared for a very underwhelming January.

It`ll be funded by player sales too.

Which makes sense if Allardyce isn`t going to be here past the Summer.
