Transition From Youth to First Team Players

Don't be daft. Not ten a penny granted, but certainly there's been opportunities at the business end of games over the last few years to give a few youngsters minutes.

I'm not a Moyes basher which for some bizarre reason has become fashionable on here, Moyes done a magnificent job over the years, but for me, his substitutions, both negative when we needed to be positive, and not giving a kid on the bench game time when results weren't in doubt, did irritate me more often than not.

Cheltenham away being the most obvious one. Oldham at home as well. And spot on about Duffy, that lad has imagined a few loans there, as you said Duffy's Dad even came on here and told us the score. Moyes certainly stifled Duffy's development, I bet that was one player who wasn't disappointed to see him leave.

Off topic a little but jags was on the radio this morning talking about training, he was saying it was completely different and they are training with the ball a lot more.

Two things with this, Duffy had two loans last season and I'm pretty sure one the season before. Last season we had all sorts of kids out on loan, Duffy, Barkley, Bidwell, Gueye, Hammar and Lundstrum off the top of my head. It's not like we don't do it, we've done it when it's right for them and us. We had a small squad like you say and there was no point in making it smaller.

The other thing, when in the last few seasons have we actually really had many games sewn up comfortably enough to consider drastically changing the team shape, not very often.[/QUOTE]

This x 1000

I personally loved moyes and still think he deserves utter respect from our fans (not getting any on here though) but, he was sh1t at subs and sh1t at getting the kids some real game time.

What loans were they mate? I remember him having a loan to S****horpe a couple of years back but nothing last season?

His father used to tell us on here that he was itching to play games and go out on loan but Moyes wouldn't sanction it as he needed him for back up.

If Moyes needed back up, he should have brought in experienced cover like he did with Hitzlesperger (sp) last year instead of stifling the career of a young lad who needs games.

Your right im completely wrong about last season it was ofcourse the season before, wasn't it S****horpe and Burnley? He was recalled because Jags and Disitn where both out injured.

Duffy ofcourse would benefit from a substantial loan to a championship club, and now with 4 senior centrebacks at the club Martinez can be more accommodating than Moyes has previously been able to. The season he was loaned out for a few months clearly showed Moyes was willing to let this happen, but simply last season number where to low to let it.

I can imagine MOTD highlighting our young players this year, especially:

Stones (19)
Barkley (19)
Deulofeu (19)

It's easy to forget how young these other players though:

Oviedo (23)
Coleman (24)
Mirallas (25)
Anichebe (25)
Fellaini (25)
Gibson (25)

Thus far in pre season there's been several good examples of why using mistakes as a stick to beat young inexperienced players with is pretty stupid.

Pienaar missed a one on one, Fellaini gave it away twice in his own half, Osman failed to control a ball, Jags passed to an opposition player and conceded a goal.

But we know how good they can be so its just part of football that mistakes will be made. But young inexperienced players will make more, you need to look at what good things they offer and allow them the chance to do that whilst accepting mistakes they make.

I know its only been friendlys so far but the same applies to the league. Of course every point counts and you don't want any mistakes costing us but being too scared to play a young inexperienced player in case they make one is too short sighted, at worst they might cost us points now but long term they might gain us points due to learning from the experience.
