Transition From Youth to First Team Players

Some do mate, and not just from us. That being said, cant think of one our youngsters being loaned out ATM. Trouble is, the loans are usually to lower league teams, that might not be able to look after the lad as well as a big club can, (schooling, coaching, general growing up really), and that kind of restricts the clubs that would be suitable to loan to.

Beckham was loaned to Preston, (I think), before he broke through at Utd for example.

I think we should loan lads to clubs in the SPL more actually. Maybe set up a relationship with a club up there (I'm sure Jock would approve if some of our youngsters were playing at Dundee United for instance)

It was great to see Grant, McAleny, Vellios, Kennedy, Gueye, Duffy, Browning and Junior playing with the first-team on Sunday.

Looking at their ages:

Gueye 23
Vellios 21
Junior 21
Duffy 21
McAleny 20
Kennedy 19
Browning 19
Grant 18

Gueye, Vellios, Duffy, Junior and possibly McAleny should be playing first-team football this year. Whether it's a Carling Cup campaign, cameos in the Premier League or a loan is up to the manager.

We then also have Barkley (19), Stones (19), Garbutt (19), Lundstram (19), Hope (19), Pennington (19), Long (18) and Touray (18).

I don't think that they all had first-team squad numbers last season, so that must be an encouragement for them.

I'd probably try and give Duffy, Vellios and Barkley as many games as possible this year. I thought Junior looked good in pre-season last year and could be worth a few appearances this time round.

I doubt Gueye is going to make the mark with us and it's probably time to let him go.

We could then send Stones, Garbutt, McAleny and Lundstram out on loan with a view to integrating them better in 2014-15.

I would send Duffy out on loan also, their seems to be too many players in the pecking order above him to get game time with us

Loaning players to Weir at Sheffield United would seem like an obvious step. We used to have a lot of ex-toffees in management but there are only a handful now, otherwise we could use that network.

Wow, 20 posts and no-one has brought up wonder kid George Green and his magical back heel, well this youtube link is well better

I think Heitinga has said that he wants to go and won't be signing a new contract. If Martinez wants to play three centrebacks (Jagielka, Alcaraz and Distin), he'll need a fourth one as backup.

But then players who are in the first team squad but are coming back from injury would have no form of football to play in, to ease their way back in.

Your options would be solely the first teams or training.

Behind closed doors friendly. That's how most players coming back from injury play anyway these days.

I think they need to somehow integrate a B team league into the Pyramid system. It could be under 21 or under 23 for B teams, and a certain amount of home-grown players in your squad. It's how Barcelona and Spain are breeding their youngsters. It gives the added advantage of you maintaining control of your younger players development while giving them competitive games.

Even if it meant all/only Category A Academies or the like to start with, could enter a B team in a Conference North/South level. They could split those two leagues in to three and hopefully make the North and South mean something as it's a bit odd as it is. It may not be the highest standard to start with but with promotion/relegation teams would find their level. For the sides currently in those divisions promotion may or may not become more difficult but (potential) increased gate receipts and perhaps even tv deals could generate much needed additional revenues.

.......very few players come through the ranks and I have generally been of a mind that if they are good enough they will get a game. What I don't like is the push from supporters to give youngsters 'a run of games to prove themselves'. I'm afraid results are so precious that we can't use premiership matches as trial games.

This I can agree with. Every result is so big in the Premier League. Take Newcastle last year for example. They lost out on £2.25 million because they finished 16th whereas with three more points in the campaign they'd have made almost double the prize money they did. I am all for giving our youngsters a chance--I'm a huge advocate of it, actually. But when table slots are so valuable (6 points seperated Newcastle from 9th, where they would have made £9 million, as opposed to £3.8 million) that there are no real games where you can throw some younger players out and get them experience. We need to be in a situation where they can play in front of fans, play games that mean something, even if it's in League One on loan. Where prize money is so valuable, especially to a side like Everton, we need maximum points from every single game possible. Just my two cents on the matter, though I agree--we need to figure out a way to bring our young guys on. It benefits everybody financially, because a) we don't have to pay massive transfer fees for quality players and b ) if they do choose to go on, we can cash in on them and add it to our kitty.

I think these are the sentiments of most managers. It could've argued that in a situation where we have nothing to lose then youth should be given a chance.

I think the gulf between youth team, reserves and 1st team are far too big which is why some players only ever reach the fringes.

Someone suggested a B-team type integration similar to other European countries would improve the situation which I think is a good shout. Dunno how it's work though as the English football league has more professional football clubs than anyone in the world other than Argentina and maybe Brazil I think.?

*no source for that fact like.
