Training Questioned

Robin Van Persie has barely played in three years.

Jimmy Bullard's knee's kept him out for longer.

Yet no one's been questioning Wenger or Hodgson's training methods.

You one's thinking that injuries will never happen in a sport like football need to get real.

Its a high impact sport with lots of running, jumping and turning. In order to play it you need to be fit. And you can get injured playing it.

You can't wrap players in cotton wool. Equally you don't flog players to death.

Moyes does neither. He manages players as best as anyone could.

For one thing he doesn't routinely use injections to make players play like they did 5 or so years ago. He attends plenty of conferences and speaks to many coaches.

Its just the one's doing the criticising haven't a clue what they're talking about.

Those whining about injuries would take the challenge of football out of the sport. Its not meant to be easy. Otherwise people wouldn't play or watch it.

It bothers me that 9 times out of 10, when we're told that a player is doubtful before a game, he will be played anyway. The Guardian reported that Anichebe was doubtful for the Birmingham match, but he played about 25 minutes. The week before that Coleman was carrying a knock, but we still used him. If we rotated the likes of Hibbert, Bily and Heitinga earlier, and maybe gave Baxter 20 minutes to save Saha, then possibly we would have a healthier squad. I think we have to emulate what the more successful teams do as much as is practical.

Emulate what exactly?

Anichebe isn't as fit as he should be as he's lazy and doesn't focus enough.

The coaches have told him to buckle down plenty of times.

And as for this rotation lark. Check out the injury record of Ladyboy under Benitez.... or Gerrard.

Hardly something you would to want to emulate.

Rafael rushed Torres back from injury early a ton of times, Matt.

Exactly. Not something you want to emulate.

Anichebe's "injury problems" are debatable as being actual injury problems or him in reality being lazy and / or not looking after himself like a Premier League footballer should.

Vic's dispute with the coachs was well documented.

As was him being out on the p*** the night before an FA cup tie the season before last.

Sorry. I'm laughing my head off here.

Check who's scored the most goals in the second half of a game this season and particularly in the last 10 minutes. That suggests superior fitness and training.

If we aren't the one who's top, then we're probably 2nds or 3rd in the list.

Unbelievable.

You're also confusing FITNESS , INJURIES and organisation and setpieces.

I don't disagree with your point about us scoring late in games. Organisationally though, we go to pot. Players who were trying to get back to defend up until that point decide to linger up front and we lose our shape. Looking at the stats, most of our goals are conceded midway through the second half. I would argue that players for the top teams in the league cover far more distance during a game, getting up and down the pitch, than we do.

mustve all been ironed out then coz he was given a nice new contract, so its all history cept for the up to date daft injuries to everyone else

That's too players who were used when they hadn't fully had a chance to recover from a previous injury. We're guilty of the same thing. We could possibly use Saha more selectively to ensure that he's fit for key games. We know how prone to injury he is. Fergie could have persisted with Ferdinand, but he pulled him out of the team to give him a chance of making a more long-term recovery, and gave an opportunity to Smalling instead. Arsenal treated Rosicky cautiously. Chelsea gradually nursed Lampard back.

I'm going to play my twice weekly game of 11 a side tonight, Ive got a very sore calf, my left ankle is always a bit stiff and Ive damaged my shoulder in the gym. However I will still play as these are just niggles and with 5 minutes warm up I wont feel them. You can play with knocks and niggles, Ive been doing it for 25 years.

If I stayed in the treatment room at the slightest ache or pull I would never play football. Players know their own bodies and some have different pain thresholds, Cahill plays every week with a tight calf from an old injury.
