"Top 6"

Yesterday on soccer Saturday they wee trying to sell Kane to Utd, saying he be a great Ibra replacement. Yet Spurs are 2nd and Utd 6th.

In terms of top 7 it's annoying they only say top 6 but we did finish 11th twice. Next year when Arsenal are 10th and were 4th it will be a top 3

Well I find it funny that hardly any of the top 6 have won anything substantial other than the league the last few seasons, and that's only been Chelsea and City. And Arsenal had those two FA cups, United last year.

They've put so many teams on a pedestal when in reality nobody is good enough to win this season other than Chelsea, and that gap shows that they aren't actually as good as the media have you believe.

Even if we got top 4 they'd spin a top 3 or something. Happy for us to go about our own business and let success be our noise.

Anyone from West Bromwich down have the ability to bad enough to get relegated on a given season. Anyone above us is good enough to finish top 4 & are currently better than us (overall). We are special. We are unique. The best of the worst. The worst of the best. We stand alone as a beacon of hope for those below us & as a warning to those above that they are not guaranteed European footie.
As it stands we can finish our season closer to the upper league than the lower. I think there will be over 10 points separating 7th & 8th come the end. Probably more.
And probably 5/6 points separating 6th from 7th too but I'd have taken that at the beginning of the season and is a good starting point for next season.

This year we had a 20 point gap to make up and we'll have taken great strides by May. Need to buy well in the summer to crack on.

As regards the thread, we need to do it consistently for 3/4 years like Spuds before minndsets change.

Even more than the points gap between us and 8th, the goal difference column says we should be considered part of the top 7 and not 'best of the rest.'

We've got at least a +18 advantage over every team below us.

It's just a media term isn't it? I doubt the club pay too much attention to the media to be honest.

They should do mate, like it or loathe it the media perception influences a whole host of other factors. From marketing the club overseas to commercial and sponsorship deals, if your not talked about as a big club it's hard to ever break that view.

You have 6 teams that for various reasons are loved by the media, maybe because their fan bases are so big built on historical success that any story about them gets more clicks than others (United Liverpool Arsenal) or they are based in London where a lot of the media also are (Spurs Chelsea). You've then also got the bizarre condition of some weak human beings of wanting to be associated with the successful team if the day regardless of who it is (City).

In reality there's a big 3 (City United Chelsea) and a 3 behind them, there's not a big 6, Spurs and Liverpool have won jack all. They are desperate for the old top 4 to be recreated in a top 6, sadly the CL places aren't that many (for now I'm sure it's on their agenda).

Pretty soon they'll just be giving CL places to wherever clubs they want regardless of their league position, the whole thing is all about money, any meaningful competition died a long time ago.

Freak or not, the fact remains both Leicester and Saints were in the "top six" last season.

And the term "best of the rest" refers to the team finishing 5th, not 7th.

And the reason for that is the teams finishing in the top four go into the promised land that is the Champion's League.

The reward for finishing "best of the rest" is The Thursday Night Cup.

Why are people so gullible as to swallow all this nonsense the media would shove down their throats simply because on this rare occasion all their ducks are in a row and their "darling" teams happen to occupy the top six places.......for now :drunk:

And as for quoting Tony Pulis as some kind of guru.....well lol
I understand where you're coming from mate and agree with what you say overall, but this thread is about media perception, not reality. There's no doubt there has been a media 4 for many years.. City gatecrashed that to make it a 5 and there's no doubt that Spurs consistency over the last few years have now made it a 6. Last season with Leicester winning and Chelsea 10th was just a blip in the medias eyes. If the foxes repeated their form for 2/3 seasons they'd have to take notice. We would have to show that same consistency to make it a media 7. We know media darlings like RS Utd and Arse are always going to be included so finish regularly above any of them a media 7 it is.

On one level you think why should we give a damn because its just a game. But like it or not, the modern game is media driven and when we do make it a top 7 its because we have become succesful on the pitch.

Spurs have always been one of the media darlings.

Well said. I do also see where he is coming from with his frustration but we have to accept that we have to prove it on and off the pitch in this era in order to become one of the highly regarded teams.

In the modern game, that's by being in the top 4, playing in the Champions League, winning trophies, and having a modern or big stadium. We don't meet any of that criteria in the past 12 years since finishing 4th in 04-05. All of the other 6 teams meet at least 1 in that time.

I think if we have a good summer, and more comes out about the Stadium, then the media will have to start viewing us in a different light and as a different proposition. Spurs are the realistic example we should be looking to follow. Often talked down at the expense of their neighbours, still haven't won much for years, but have built a team to challenge on the pitch, and are building a 61,000 seater. We can do both of those things and are hopefully going to.
