i personally don't think accidents should be given a red, regardless of the situation, but how can a ref know?

i'm happy for reds to be given for things like the suarez handball at the world cup where they cinacally deny a goal, preferably, the ref would just give the goal and the red card for the player cheating, but not for "denying a goalscoring opportunity" where the oppo also gets

....a goalscoring opportunity.

Currently, if a forward hits the deck when rounding a keeper, the ref can wave play on if he hasn't seen contact. It doesn't necessarily follow that the forward IS a cheat. He can also give the forward the benefit of the doubt and not book him for diving. I think that's fair enough if the ref is unsure.

Keepers should get the same benefit if the doubt. Unless he knows it was cynical, he shouldn't book them.

with regards to schezny today, it was pure accident (if i remember correctly anyway) so harsh to be sent off, even with the denying goalscoring opportunity rule.

totally different to a defender hacking down a striker who they know will score - that's cheating.

i think your first paragraph is spot on as well, which begs the question, why can't we then bring in retrospective action to ban those that are guilty of diving.

use replays to get it right and cut down on cheating rather than relying on a ref with a split-second, sometimes obscured decision.

it's not even a tough

When Howard got sent off against Sunderland on Boxing Day, I thought he should have just let Ki score and we'd be one down and still have XI players.

Hart incidentally did that on the same day in the later game against TRS letting Coutinho score.

The rule has been clear for about 20 years! Why the sudden outrage because it's hurt 2 English teams?

I actually didn't care who won. I just wanted to see a good contest. It's not a sudden outrage, just think that that it's out of proportion to send him off. It's the main talking point of the game.

I agree with Michael Ballack. If a penalty is awarded then is the keeper actually preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity? Surely there's not many clearer goalscoring opportunities than a penalty? It's just a foul, really.

Maybe they should think about it not being a red card if it's inside the box? Not sure there wouldn't be some knock on effect from that though.

hang on, Robben would have tapped it into an empty net from 2 yards. How is a penalty a better scoring oppurtunity? The fouled team is getting punished there!

The sending off was correct. I have to admit that watching Bayern was hypnotising. Their speed of passing, technical skills and work rate was really impressive. They have taken tiki taka and added discipline, it's a wonderful combination..........
