hang on, Robben would have tapped it into an empty net from 2 yards. How is a penalty a better scoring oppurtunity? The fouled team is getting punished there!

no guarantee he'll have scored though, plenty of players have missed open goals from such positions, remember torres did it vs united a few years back.

at least they still have an opportunity to make ammends. i mean it's not the same as someone breaking clean through 40 yards from goal and he's hacked down. you then end up with a free kick 40 yards from goal, a massive loss.

When Howard got sent off against Sunderland on Boxing Day, I thought he should have just let Ki score and we'd be one down and still have XI players.

Hart incidentally did that on the same day in the later game against TRS letting Coutinho score.

sort of a reactionary thing to do, think he genuinly thought he could get the ball. we all know there was not enough contact to make ki go down, but because of the rule he decided to because he knew it would have been easier to play 70 mins against us with 10 men than just be 1-0 up - ruined the game really because the better team lost.

A million percent this.

Rules are rules. The games the game.

Exactly. People get offended when the rules are put into action. It's a game. The rules got made up.

Also, a good comment on the Guardian MBM that the red card is punishment for the foul, the penalty is to make sure the offending team don't get an advantage from it.

Perhaps it's because I am new to the sport, but I tend to see things such as what toffeejack was discussing as being unnecessarily harsh. Penalties in the Premier league are converted around 85% of the time, and you can choose who takes it. That is more than adequate compensation in my opinion, without having to send the player off. Again, it may be because I have a tendency to compare to what would happen in other sports in a similar situation. If a guy is hauled down on a breakaway in hockey, he is given a penalty shot. In the NHL the conversion rate of a penalty shot tends to hover around 30%. The difference is the offending player is not also given a misconduct and ejected from the game.

I understand that it is the rule of the game, and has been for many years, however that doesn't mean that rules cannot be debated and refined. I do like toffeejack's point about preserving the game as a whole, and it just feels like bringing a side down to 10 men for something akin to the Szczęsny incident takes away from the game.

Feel free to set me straight, but from an outsider's perspective, it seems quite harsh.

Did anyone see Adebayors interview when he got clipped by his own team mate about a week ago?

He said "I felt a touch so I went down". Says it all
