Isn't last man just denoted as the last defender? I know there's another defender behind him but still don't know if that's the rule. Just can't do that these days.

Defender was in line with him so it wasn't last man.

As @ToffeeTim says, there's denying a goal scoring opportunity and there's the rule that says if he's attempted to get the ball, it's a yellow rather than a red.
