It was a blockbuster by Matic...if Barkley scores that we'd be buzzing. Not many keepers would've saved that. De Gea and Courtois might have got fingers on it but doubt it.

It was a thunderous shot two faults MaCarthy, ad Ross just stood looking at him giving him the time, and space, but TH positioning on his six yard box which seems a modern trend now with some keepers even theirs for Naismiths second stand too far out on the six yard line - it makes the attacking players mind up straight away it's worth having a ping not saying if TH was further back he could have saved that shot, but it invited the shot which was a stunner, Just like Naismith which was again poor positioning on the six yard line by their keeper he looked up and seen the space , and fancied it with his weaker foot!

TH has been better this season, and had little to do yesterday, the defence were brilliant, his easiest 90 mins of goalkeeping this season, and by the way TH has improved quite a bit from last years performances, He is now an ageing Keeper who we have to find a replacement for if Robles suspect, maybe he should go out on loan in January, and and a better future no1 in to give TH better competition!

I've literally just admitted in the match thread, that I know next to nothing about goalkeeping. What's your view on his positioning for the goal ijj?

I only put my comment there to annoy @Dithering Dougie mare really.

Need to see it again mate, positioning didn't initially annoy me. From memory I didn't like the way he kind of flapped at it as he was mid dive. Most keepers would have a strong arm rather than a flappy one of that makes sense.

But really it's nitpicking. It was a boss shot that flew in.

For a twenty to thirty yard strike like that, the goalkeeper's actually better off on the six yard line. When the ball's coming from that far away, the difference in reaction time by being a few yards closer is more than made up for by cutting down the amount of lateral territory needed to cover. If anything, he would have been better off (purely from a shot stopping standpoint) if he had been a few yards further out of the goal. Of course, when you do that, you're screwed by a simple pass.

If you're just looking at a scenario where you know someone is absolutely going to shoot and you don't need to worry about any other players changing the point of attack, you should ideally be as close as you can to the shooter while still being able to backpedal close enough to cover a chip.

It's simple geometry...always thought that was a weird stick to beat him with.

No he is not

It was an unstoppable shot. Having said that, Big Nev would have gone and sat by the post, tweeted some abuse to Kenwright, gone round the ground emptying the bins, had a pie, and then caught it one handed.

Yes, he really is. Think about it -- there isn't a human alive that can cover four yards to either side of him. If you move closer to the the attacker, though, you shrink the amount of area to either side of you that you need to cover to either side, to the point where you can theoretically reach any goalbound shot.

The only time you should ever criticize a keeper for being too far off his line for a goal is if the shot is chipped over him (or if he comes out too far and is beaten by a pass to a different attacker that changes the angle of attack).

we are not talking about a chip over the keepers head its a thunderbolt shot if a keeper was a bit further back the less the angle for the ball to fly past him look at Naismiths 2nd goal the gap in the corner was passable as their Keeper was on the six yard line the gap was there and it went in directly into the corner if he has been say three yards towards his line he may have had a chance to tip it around the post - pens are saved sometimes from 12 yards out with a keeper on his line!
Thats why they seem to try and encroach a yard out to cover the angles if they guess the right way of the pen kick to save it!
