2017/18 Theo Walcott

In theory, Walcott and Bolasie should give us a lightning counter attack. In practice it hasn’t happened once. Maybe worth giving him a game down the middle.

We're relying on two players for pace there though who have had bad ACL injuries recently. On top of Coleman at right back with that terrible injury and Baines on his last legs.

Baffling how quiet he's been since he's arrived, bar a couple of good games when he first joined. I shouldn't be surprised because we have a manager who has struggled at every club he's been at post-Bolton at getting the best out of forward players. For the life of me I don't understand why we're not playing Walcott on the shoulder against these big 6 teams with high lines and looking for the ball in behind. He'll be a really good asset I hope when we don't have a tactical fossil at the helm.

Our forward play out of of midfield has been for a long time now slow, laborious and lacking creativity. As a result, we're very easy to read.

You can see that Walcott especially has the movement and anticipation to make great moves off the ball, but he knows the ball won't be made.

Furthermore, our left hand side with Bolasie lacks pretty much any impetus and this means Baines is also heavily restricted in what he can do.

Agree mate, we have no bridge between midfield and the advanced positions, Baines ability to penetrate has waned for me, thus the foundation of our play from deep positions is limited, this leaves the from positions isolated.

Class above most in the squad. We play with no midfield most games so can get isolated or is basically playing RB.

True mate, but for me there is no bridge between the midfield and the adcancet four lines and positions. We have no creativity in central midfield and increasingly less so on the less flank from deep positions, i love Leighton but his powers are waning.

Yes. And Wayne should be just a squad player at present...SAm is right about this. Someone with less talent than Rooney but with more physical presence and pace would do a better job, unfortunately. If Bolton get relegated again Shaquiri might be a reasonable punt at a reasonable price. He would be handy with Walcott and Siggi to play off. If Rooney stays next season I can't see him getting much game time.

True.We have wingers, which is good, but don't allow them to play like wingers, which is bad. Walcott is a good enough player to be able to make a good effort at 'helping the defence', but there is no way on planet Earth that Bolassie is a useful back up for an ageing full back.
I'm sure SAm knows all this....and I think he may well be here next season, so his summer purchases will be geared to filling certain holes in the squad.

It would help if when we do get the ball up to players like Bolasie it would stick once and a while. The ball retention is shockingly bad.

This comes down to sam for me, we dropped off so deep every time liverpool had the ball, it was always going to be difficult to counter.
I couldn’t believe the tactics. You looked at there team and have a donkey CB playing at left back a right back who hadn’t played all season.

The best system would have been a tight 3 across the midfield and left bolasie and Walcott up the pitch. We could have even pushed Coleman forward down the right to try and get 2 v1 situations.
I know it’s the Walcott thread Apologies.

But this idiot in charge only knows how to play one way and won’t even change to try and exploit the opposition. And there are fans who are prepared to give him another season.
