There are very few people where I Iive that don't speak any English and the waiting time in the hospital is still hours and hours.
It's not the sole reason but it adds to the issue and does have an impact as a result. Much the same as my very experienced driving instructor mentioning that the biggest reason for test waiting times is people taking (and failing) driving tests who don't grasp the languagein great numbers. He knows what he is talking about but his experience is it's that test centre for that area and can't apply to the entire country. However it will be impacting elsewhere because I highly doubt it's only an issue in Widnes.

In response to your anecdotal post? Yes.
None of my post related to or had any interest in any suggestion of not treating anyone on any grounds. I simply offered a real life example where the information you shared isnt accurate in my selected perspective on the subject. It is quite disappointing that you would assume such a thing as a dismissive response.

Maybe you talk to dodgy people?

Why has the waiting time doubled?

In response to the covid pandemic in 2020-21, 850,000 tests were cancelled and only 436,000 were taken. When the cancellation was lifted the following year, 1.5 million tests were taken. This was only as many as had been taken each year since 2007 but the sudden increase put a strain on an already creaky system. In 2022-23, 1.7m tests were taken, an increase caused partly by the covid backlog, by the economy bouncing back and by more people deciding to take their test, a decision which, for some, was prompted by fears of contracting covid on public transport.

What have been the reasons since then?

Many older examiners chose to retire during covid and, despite government pledges, most haven’t been replaced. This is partly because examiners earn, on average, much less than instructors – from around £30,000 compared with £45,000 (some of this paid in cash…). Examiners have gone on strike in recent years over their pay levels, further increasing test waiting times.

Training to be an examiner is a relatively long process, too, and if a candidate fails twice, they must go back to the beginning of the course. This puts off many aspiring examiners. Examining is a stressful job with most examiners claiming to have experienced abuse when failing candidates. It’s why they now wear bodycams.

The DVSA, which operates the driving test, has also blamed bad weather for forcing the cancellation of tests. Other reasons include insufficient numbers of test centres. For example, one centre in Reading is due to close in 2025 but it’s not known where its replacement will be or when it will open.

Changes in population will inevitably have an impact, but we have to be careful how we discuss this for a number of reasons:

a) You identify people based purely on their language skills. They could be tourists, they could be UK citizens, they could be run of the mill immigrants, or they could be refugees. I kinda suspect that you have no idea which they might be.

b) I understand that it's part of May's "hostile environment", but don't you think it's grim that the health service is even bothered about where people come from or whether they have a right to be treated, rather than just treating people according to their need? Isn't the latter more in keeping with the whole ethos of the NHS?

c) It's well documented that migrants as a whole generate more for the exchequer than they consume, in large part because they tend to be of working age so don't consume as much as other people. So, the problem for migration (and the changes in population you mention) isn't the migrants but the government not spending the excess these people provide them to improve the service. For refugees, this would be helped enormously, for all concerned, if the ban on them working was lifted so they could start contributing the moment they arrive.

1: Other countries (on the way to UK) take in far more asylum seekers.

=As they should do for genuine asylum seekers.

2: A significant number of asylum seekers CHOOSE to try to get to the UK.

= In which case they are not genuine asylum seekers, simply those persons who decide to get into the UK under false pretences.

Even a simpleton can read between the lines here -- but there's no need as its spelled out in black and white.

If there are millions of people added to the population then of course there will be more pressure on services.

I read an article (maybe posted in here) stating that there were the same concerns as you posted -- where a local council (?) stated that those concerns were unfounded due to a local private hospital being paid to cater for those exact asylum seekers -- on top of free lodging and meals of course.

As Bruce Wayne's quote attests to, a significant amount of these undocumented people are choosing to get into the UK -- rather than e.g France.

I wonder why...

You have to wonder how much this is to benefit both parties, her political interests her husbands on going investigations. Wonder if a combination of donations and blackmail to ensure loyalty. Can imagine Trump could pardon or force the justice department not to go after a prosecution of Vince if he gets himself in anymore trouble.

Seems to be all his choices have shady backgrounds and lack credentials.
