I was asking because after reading 1984 which is so forgettable, i thought someone would enlighten me about its merits.
I haven`t read Animal Farm, but The road to Wigan Pier is lost to my memory also. Both of the books i`ve read by Orwell have been nothing to shout about, good ideas yes but as for literary masterpieces- nope.
I'm about a third of the way through it

I have not. I have read Irving, he's good, but I haven't had the itch to reread any of it for some time. Vonnegut I have also read, and he's not my personal cup of tea. Abnett is a new one on me.

Point being, what doesn't impress you may impress others, and the community that reads science fiction heavily probably weights criteria differently than you do when rendering judgment. If that's the stuff you like, I would point you to William Gibson and to stuff like Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
I`ll check out some Gibson, Mitchell stuff- thanks.

Vonneguts writing is quite varied and most stores lump him in the science fiction section because they don`t know where else he fits. I don`t think he is SF at all.
Which Irving, Vonnegut stuff have you read?

A little consistency dear, it's such a chore keeping up with such a raging intellect.
