Current Affairs The UK/EU thread....

Now seems as good a time as any breath new life into this thread.

Tomorrow our PM will trigger Article 50, setting in train our exit from the EU. All the pundits are saying it's going to be a long and difficult haul, but I don't think so. The EU fanatics are hell bent on punishing the UK right from the word go. Bring it on because this will reduce the remoaners to a small rump of extremists, traitors even. We are Great Britain, never been beaten by any of the 27, though Germany, France and Spain have tried over the centuries without success, and have (with the support of the USA) given these countries the freedoms which they now enjoy.

The EU is corrupt and falling apart, an absurd project which no-one with a brain in their head could possibly support. We don't need a hard Brexit; we need a very hard Brexit. The carmakers in Germany and the wine growers in France must be quaking in their boots; a 30% import charge on their goods would see them bankrupt.

Let them just try to impose an exit bill of £50b and it's game over. We are out.

I think the term 'traitor' is one that should be utilised more often, from Clegg, Blair and his like to the shenanigans of the SNP. They all ignore and revolt against a democratic vote yet sympathise and support the EU. 'Traitor' is an apt word........

So, farewell then, last full day of being properly part of a progressive, war-free vision of Europe. Tomorrow, [Poor language removed] happens.

War for 2,000+ years then seventy years of solid, seemingly-lasting peace.

Ah well, at least we won't have Johnny Foreigner telling us we can't exploit British workers any more. The ruling class have Taken Back Control!!

Huzzah.

That's right mate. No more unelected bureaucrats telling us what to do, or making us follow laws that they have dreamed up......now we can vote in or out Leaders who will make our laws again, just like we always have......

Like our own leader, Theresa May.

Oh.

Loving your fantasy world, Pete. Pity it's based on a mythic past (Oh Sweet Albion! Would that you weren't mythic!) and a lot of lies about the present.

Whitehall is more bureaucratic than Brussels; I don't feel any less represented in Europe that I do in Britain.

We've been stitched up good and proper by a bunch of lying, racist gets, many of who will now fill their boots.....

But the truth still is that you can vote out May, but you cannot vote out Juncker.....we call it democracy.....

Sorry, but Whitehall is nowhere near as bureaucratic as Brussels is - for a start, every bit of their considerable output has to be translated exactly into numerous languages. That output then has to be discussed, bounced around and agreed across all - on in some areas a qualified majority - of the 28 (soon to be 27, of course) member nations, and after it has been agreed is then rarely read, given the lack of interest most people have in the EU and the general lack of quality in the European Parliament.

In fact, if you want to see how much more bureaucratic they are take a look at the pay and conditions of EU permanent officials - even Sir Humphrey would be green with envy at it all.

The UK leaving is just the beginning of the end for the EU. Nobody wants a European superstate, nobody wants a European Army/Navy/Air Force. It looks entirely possible that Le Pen could win the vote in France which would trigger a vote to leave over there too.

I disagree - people (including here FWIW) would accept a European super-state, and they would accept a combined European armed forces provided those things were set up properly, competently and democratically. Such a state would solve a lot of the problems with the modern EU, and those it didn't solve would probably recede in scale anyway. We as a nation would also be free of the great strategic problem that has faced us for nearly seven hundred years as well.

The point is though that the EU as it currently stands is never going to result in such a state.
