Why would any sane businessman not fund the minor contribution we needed to obtain a major asset ? Genuinely interested to hear a rational answer.

OK, I'm assuming Johnson is this sane buisnessman. He would not have funded KD for the benefit of Everton because he was only interested in benefiting himself. If his track record proves otherwise, I'm all ears, i mean eyes.
