Those three games against Spurs, Villa and City (all away from home) could be key. Those are the games we can least afford to lose.

The run-in, and the climb to Europe..

As it stands:

6th (Guaranteed Europa League) - The RS (48 Points, 9 games remaining)
7th (Probable Europa League) - Aston Villa (45, 12 games remaining)
8th Birmingham (43, 10 games remaining)
9th Everton (41, 10 games remaining)

And the remaining schedule:

13/03/10 -- Birmingham (8th) v Everton,
20/03/10 -- Everton v Bolton (14th)
27/03/10 -- Wolverhampton (17th) v Everton
03/04/10 -- Everton v West Ham (16th)
10/04/10 -- Aston Villa v Everton (7th)
17/04/10 -- Blackburn (12th) v Everton
24/04/10 -- Everton v Fulham (10th)
01/05/10 -- Stoke (11th) v Everton
09/05/10 -- Everton v Portsmouth (20th)

Everton also has a game against Man City (5th), no date announced yet (unless I missed it)

Well, I don't think anyone can complain about the schedule coming down to the wire. Everton plays all the teams around them in the chase for the Europa spot, and nearly all the teams playing out the string or in relegation fights.

Bolton, Wolverhampton, West Ham, and Portsmouth are all teams that are either in, or can fairly easily be sucked into, the relegation dogfight.

So.. how does it break down?

Key Games:

This weekend's game against Birmingham is probably the most important game of the remaining ones.. a win here directly harms a possible Europa League challenger, and keeps a large amount of momentum up for the next three againstlower ranked teams

30 Points on offer.. I think something like 20 points is necessary to realistically challenge for a Europe spot (61 points).

Normally, I'd say not even that much would be enough, considering the lead the RS have on Everton, even with the game in hand.. but when you look at the RS schedule, it's a minefield (Man Yoo, Chelsea, Birmingham.

So I guess Everton's best bet for making Europe next year is to hope that Fulham lose either the replay with Spurs, or choke the bit against Portsmouth (remember, if Portsmouth make the final, the Europa League spot they would have had goes to 7th place, due to today's news about not filing for UEFA certification for next season).. and then to take care of business in the league.

Any thoughts? Am I too optimistic/pessimistic?

There's still a lot to be resolved yet, what with FA cup winners and all and who gets their foot in the door to Europe with regard to end of season placing, I just say 6th would be a safe bet for a European berth, although 7th may just be in there, and don't forget there's always the Intertoto cup, although I'm not even sure if thats still in existence.

The road ahead looks free of traffic, with only fixtures at Villa, Blackburn and City maybe proving a fly in the ointment, that home fixture with West Ham looks academic, another three points off that sorry lot, away at Birmingham could be tricky, but I'm confident here, and the others don't really threaten, even a trip to a partizan Stoke City is not that intimidating for us.

It's a little too soon perhaps to say what could happen, but we have a chance to get into a European berth, the opportunity is there, but it's going to be down to Moyes and the players to deliver on that opportunity, hopefully they won't let anybody down.

If we lose against Brum I think we're going to have a tough time just getting 8th. We'll know more after this weekend.

Well, unless I'm mistaken, 6th is guaranteed (that spot would have gone to the League Cup winner, and somehow I don't think Man Yoo is going to drop out of the top 5), and 7th all depends on how the FA Cup breaks down, and realistically, only Fulham can take that spot, and they have to beat Tottenham at Spurs and then Portsmouth..

but yeah, a draw is the MININUM they need to get this week, really.

Dug ourselves too big a hole at the beginning of the season. My guess is that we get 7th or 8th.

I'm betting though that the [Poor language removed] finish in 7th or 8th as well.

I was reading something similar about all this from ToffeeWeb in the bath the other night.

One or two even went as far to say that next season, Everton should not be looking for 4th place, but as Champions themselves, I could not agree with that,we have a good side here and players getting back, but let's not get carried away.

It did say that the Lescott nonsense pre season and Moyes dithering with bringing in new faces, also the Arsenal debacle early on did no-one any favors, got off to a bad start all considered.

It would be good to think we could get 24 out of those 30 points. And IF the belief that we're getting back to School of Science days is true, then we should be in with a shout.

If we miss it by a squeak AND the Rs fail to make a CL place, the season won't have been a complete disaster. If that happens, the summer will be very entertaining. While we're laughing at the various dramas over at Anfield Road, however, we have to be absolutely certain that our pre season is 100% better than the last couple.

I said 6th even when we were bottom of the table, and I still say it. As much as I think we can win at Brum, City and Villa - if not all of them - doing so just makes it easier for the RS to finish in the top 6 too!

In the bath?

Apart from the brum game th Stoke game away is gona be damn hard for us. They are in terrific form atm and I remember what happened there last season and thanK god that Timmy got the comeback goal. I also hope that we come out of that game with 3 points and aswell as injury free. I wish we could protect Arteta,Pienaar,Baines in this one as they are gona be in for some challenges on em and so I hope they do fine and stay injury free. UNLEASH JOHNNY HEITINGA ON STOKE!(y)

Basically we are gonna beat all the teams we play cause theyre all crap and we are gonna win the league.

That BBC predictor is good but not all the remaining games are listed. I wanted to predict up to before start of play on the last Sunday but not all teams had played 37 games. For the record my table (minus the missing games but including all games listed in the predictor bar the last day) read:

P Team P GD PTS

1 Chelsea 36 51 81
2 Arsenal 37 49 81
3 Man Utd 37 49 79
4 A Villa 35 24 63
5 Man City 36 18 61
6 Everton 36 14 61
7 RedShite 37 16 58
8 Spurs 36 20 57
9 Brum 37 -1 52
10 Fulham 36 5 50
11 Blackburn 37 -11 49
12 Stoke C 36 -1 48
13 Sunderland 37 -9 42
14 Wigan A 36 -27 38
15 Bolton W 36 -27 32
16 West Ham 37 -20 31
17 Wolves 37 -36 27
18 Burnley 37 -41 27
19 Hull City 37 -41 22
20 Pompey 36 -28 19*

*assuming 9pts deducted

My predictions for our remaining games were based on the effect that a win at Birmingham would have on the team. (I went for a 1-0 win)

We'll steamroll Birmingham if we keep the same lineup and attacking variation. They're hardly impressive, it's more like we screw ourselves up with one dimension cross hoof during our last 2 meetings.
