The Oldies Thread

The old news paper trick, that's when the echo had big pages just like the old news of the world. Used to like doing toast or crumpets on the fire with a big brass fork, health and safety my arse.
When you wrote news paper trick I thought you was going to write about what I heard called the Chelsea Brick in the 80s

You just can't beat an open log /smokeless coal fire - hard work, but when it runs 8 radiators plus provides all our hot water for 8-9 months ..... we live quite rural - the rich are now putting log burners in daily ......I have had mine since 1987 - chimney swept for £50.00 per year .....very dusty though .... but fantastic BTU output ..... The coal we buy now is man made nuggets, plus we buy thermal Birch tree sawdust logs - we have gravity feed plus a central heating pump .... quite economical, but not PC .....

Best investment we made was buying two little glass fronted stoves that are on either side of a double flue. One heats the kitchen dining area and the other the TV room. We knocked through a few years ago, and tbh if we light just one, it heats the whole space - minimal consumption of smokeless coal too.

Unfortunately no back boiler, but a few hours of central heating in the evening is enough to keep the bedrooms and hall cosy.

….1950s Prescot St, prefabs on the left where the entrance to Royal Liverpool Hospital now is. I actually remember prefabs on the opposite side, I walked from Everton Road to school every day off Hall Lane. Times change but the reminders are still there.
I remember those prefabs starting to come down in 66ish.
Right down at the bottom of the road where it bends round slightly to the left would be The Majestic
