Having to melt the lard in the chip pan. Now there's a memory you've stirred.
Horrible stuff, made the syrup like an oil slick. You can though make a nice sticky toffee pudding with it, it's only worthwhile use.But that evaporated milk was sickening…….
Class! I can feel my arteries thicken when I think of it. ?Those chips have never been surpassed but surely in a deep fat fryer and not a chip pan?We still do it

Talking about economies. My dad had a phobia about the immersion heater. He had an alarm clock next to it and set the alarm when he put the immersion heater on. I think he allowed 20 minutes for a bath! (1940's)Remember your mum and dad put this on the phone, but you could tap the number out at the top
Same in our house. The immersion heater was rarely on (1960's/ 70's). My dad used to boil a kettle to take it upstairs to the bathroom for a shave. I guess times were tough.Talking about economies. Our phone (same type) was in the kitchen and me and sister soon worked out that you could pick those barrel locks easy with a hairpin, and the origins of speed dial by forcing back the dial wheel quickly with finger. BUT we used to get busted with the loud bell “Ping” when putting the receiver back. Dad would get so mad. I don't even know when this stopped being a big deal in the hierarchy of household bills. Making a a call back in the day had to be planned, timing was key.Remember your mum and dad put this on the phone, but you could tap the number out at the top
