Well spotted. Bernis at New Brighton was the nearest to me but to woo the future Mrs T, it was either the New Hall or where the Crown Courts are. Prawn cocktails, rump steak, and of course Black Forest gateau washed down with Mateus Rose. Change out of a tenner 1973.

How could I forget such a thing. Of course the favourite was the Gaelic Coffee. Tried my best on countless occasions in my home surroundings to make one. Could never get the cream to float though and ended up an undignified mess.

I remember being in a Berni in the early 70s when a fella on a table nearby shouted to a waiter to " get me a bottle of your Spanish Burgundy and none of your [Poor language removed]"
His misses didnt look too impressed like

I can well imagine that scenario. In general we all tried to act a bit above our stations when we went there. Putting a show on whenever we could, having made the time and effort to get into your best bib and tucker.
Also to when you went for the first time being asked how do you want your steak. We didn't have a clue what medium rare was but because we'd heard it in a film or on a TV programme we say just that. Then grumble to ourselves that we the meat wasn't edible and too chewy.
