The Oldies Thread

Climbing Hartleys Hill when I was a toddler was an achievement, Edmund Hillary didn't manage it before he conquered Everest
My main memory of Hartleys hill was coming home one Sunday evening from a Scout camp at Tawd Vale. I had all my gear in a rather cheap rucksack which ended up being round in shape. I got the bus from Orrell Park station and as it turned the corner to go up Long Lane, my rucksack rolled out from where I had put it under the stairs and bounced down the road. Fortunately, I saw this and had to get off at the next stop and walk all the way back down the hill. Again, fortunately, it was still there at the side of the road and being Sunday, I had to wait ages for the next bus.

I have numerous bits of documentation, including my Army National Service records, all of which give my height as 6ft 3 inches. About 10 years ago, I was in hospital and they wanted to measure my height and weight. They asked me what it was: I said 6ft 3inches. The Nurse said 6ft 2 inches. I think I have probably lost a bit more too. I was right about the weight though. lol
You must have seemed like a giant in those days. Just had a quick google and the average male height in 1960's was 5'8"
What is surprising to me is that the average male height today is said to be 5'9" ??????
I swear that most lads in their 20's seem to be about 6'5"

Wow 2" is quiet a big change @Joey66.
Are you sure you didn't have your platform heels on? lol
No, I was a big tall lad all my family in an era were my father & his Uncle were 6 footers -tall lads my two uncles who now live in London mad blues of course - were 6.3 & 6 ft 4 ....- I played CF or CH - but should have joined my local cricket club in Huyton {Now distinct sadly} I was a demon fast bowler better cricketer than footballer ......
My older Brother was 6 ft one like me in his youth ..... no need for platform form boots - just wore Dr Martins at the game etc & for work....

Speedway, like Greyhound racing, are working class pastimes now sadly in decline.

Loved a night at the dogs when there was a track at the Bristol Rovers ground. By a mile, the best corporate nights out I hosted for customers. Had access at times to tickets at Old Trafford, Tickenham, Villa, Millenium Stadium, but a night at Eastville, with a prawn cocktail, steak and chips, watching the dogs with bets being placed at the table, was miles more fun.

Back in the 70s I used to go and see stock car racing at New Brighton, great fun.

Kev, strangers in shops and similar often used to say 'aren't you tall'. My dad was five feet eleven and three quarter inches and people often used to say 'isn't your dad tall'. My only grandson is 6ft 7 inches.
In the army, I was always 'right marker' on parade as I was the tallest.

Another example of how things change. I once had the fabulous experience of spending an hour and a half chatting to Henry Cooper. Just the two of us. We were in the bar at his Golf Club and he wouldn't let me buy him a drink. He bought all the drinks. He told me that the heaviest weight he ever fought at (in the heavyweight division) was 13 stone 10 pounds. That's unbelievable when you think about the weights these days.
One of the highlights of my sporting life was that.
