The Oldies Thread

Granddaughter (8) had been set handwriting practice for homework. I remarked that in my day we weren’t allowed to use a Biro at school. “Nanny, what’s a Biro?” came the reply.
One Christmas, about 1947, me and my brother got a biro each as one of our presents. They were in gold coloured metal and had 'made in USA' on. Don't know where my Dad got them from. They weren't banned in school as no one had heard of them! Couldn't use them anyway as every time you wrote anything you got a big blob of biro ink on the paper.

Nice one mate, you will love it. I did it when I was 59 and best thing I ever did. Get yourself a hobby, I get out cycling 3 or 4 times a week and also member of a gym. Also do bits of work for a few people, tidying gardens etc, but its when I want to do it and not tied to certain times, love the flexibility. Lockdown has been a bit difficult but we've hopefully, got through the worst. I try and do a good walk, 7-8 miles,
I struggled a lot when I finished work. The speed at which it happened caught me off guard. I was lucky enough to get part time work then going full time again. I did a further four years before reducing my hours then finally finishing again. Wasn't about the money, all about contact with others.

I can understand that mate, that was my biggest worry. Been a factory worker for most of my working life, so always with people. As you, the money wasnt the main issue, but I worked shifts and was really struggling with the nights, so decided I had had enough and finished.
