The Oldies Thread

Miners used to take cheese & Jam butties down the pit for the dinner.... My late father in Law ate cheeses & jam butties as an ex miner he loved them ....yuk
My old man used to like a Scone with Jam and sharp cheese with a strong cuppa. Its actually really good.
His other one that I grew to like was a toasted cheese sandwhich but do not cook the cheese at all, just butter the hot toast and put the cheese in to 'sweat ' for a minute.

A random conversation with my wife got us talking about the days when owning a television was unheard of.
All those shops making a fortune out of renting sets to us plebs. Radio Rentals, Visionhire, Granada and so on.
It got worse when video recorders entered the market place, then even worse colour TV.
In 1983 I think I was paying £34 per month to rent both. The equivalent of almost £100 in todays money.

When we moved from Leeds to Maidenhead in 1969 we had to send our old black and white rental set back because the rental company didn't cover Maidenhead. We then rented our first colour tv. The colour definition wasn't brilliant (from memory, red's always looked like purple.) When prices came down and salary went up, we started buying.

The popularity of renting the VCR shot through the roof (an unfortunate turn of phrase) when porn videos became more available.

I can recall that. Wasn't from a tv shop though. It was through the man who supplied the Sturlas cheques. All mine when I got married was from one of the aforementioned high Street outlets.

In early 1981 a local factory closed and about 900 blokes were made redundant.
It seemed as if at least 100 of them used their redundancy money to buy vans and enter the 'mobile video rental business'
It was booming at the time and seemed like easy money and regular income lol

The guys that visited twice a week with a couple of suitcase full of pirate vids all of dubious quality. Paid full whack for the Electric Blue series though.
