The Oldies Thread

Sainsbury's no longer stock blancmange as 'there's no demand for it.' I love blancmange.

Well I finally done it
Retired/took redundancy on the 30th April
First week was ok as I was busy enough
Starting to sink in and we are still in a lockdown here
No restaurants,pubs holidays etc
At least the weather is ok but this is going to take a lot of getting used to after 43 years working without a break
I will be 61 in June so hopefully a few years left to enjoy it
Any sensible advice welcome
I’ll even welcome the insensible advice as well

Buy a pool table and bar and invite your friends over. If you haven't got space for it build an extension first and then buy one...That's what I'm planning on doing anyhow seeing the Chinese have ruined travel forever. :p

Not a bad idea
I already have a man cave and a workshop I spend too much time in
Doubt the missus would go for an extension with a bar though.
I was looking forward to a lot more travel and days out with the grandkids but they are both on the back burner due to the pandemic
I thought I was being smart by getting the house and garden all done last year to leave me with free time and no lists of work
Might have been a bad idea looking back on it
Only so many walks in the park I can stomach

Routine.
Get something to look forward to each week of possible.
Keep in touch with work colleagues, even just a text.
Walking club?

I’m in 2 WhatsApp groups
One of retired lads and one with lads still in work
The retired lads meet up every 2 months for a drink and some organise a walk and a cup of coffee every couple of weeks
On the retirement course we were warned of the dangers of social isolation , so I’ll definitely meet up whenever possible
Routine is something I had for 43 years , I was looking forward to being more off the cuff and spontaneous, but the pandemic has that on hold
Looking forward to the day I can wake up and head off on a 2 hour train journey , go for lunch and a ramble and then come back in the evening

Was about to post "routine".

I took early (hopefully temporary) retirement last March cos of stuff thats well documented, and I find a routine or a structure absolutely crucial. It doesnt have to be a timetable, or even strict, but having an idea what you are doing, and roughly when, each day, just feels sound.

And dont beat yourself up if sommet you loosely planned doesnt happen. You dont need to wait till a weekend to do it.

...congrats, Bri. Next phase in your life, don’t even think back to work. 61 is a fine age to retire, you’ve worked hard for it so enjoy.
