I can't speak for Abbott because she hasn't got a documented history in government leading whole departments, but to call Grayling a 'blunderer' seems rather kind, almost a paternal description of his foray into politics.
When he still has the gall to sit on the front bench, despite costing the tax payer millions and voting through huge cuts to government spending, affecting the poorest people in society.
But mumbled police figures or something. Not as bad etc.
This conservative government is a disgrace. Shame on anyone who’s voted for them.

This may be drifting a bit off thread, however, I'll continue.
1. Yes Trump wants to deal with individual countries so that the ultra powerful US economy can pick them off, one by one. A block of 27 is more difficult for them.
2. Agreed that Russia wants to weaken the EU and also cause difficulties for NATO, whom he feels seriously threatened by.
3. Why should the EU want the UK to fail after leaving ?, surely they want to continue trading, even though they would be dearer following the crash of the £.
4. Which is precisely the reason that the Trump corporation wants the UK out.
UK crashes out no-deal. £ crashes to perhaps equity with the $. US big corp moves in, buys up what is left of UK business and institutions at bargain price. Asset strips an leaves UK as a vassal state, a colony with similar status to Costa Rica.
How would you like that? Before you scoff, remember how big corp US aided the smash and grab of former USSR assets in the post Gorbachoff (Yeltsin) era. The origin of the pro western Russian billionaire oligarchs. This may be developing into a blog but I can't understand why so many Brits are so blinded by the bright lights of the USA that they cant see the crass objectives of that administration.

3) The EU doesn’t want anymore countries to leave. Therefore we must be seen to be worse off. This has been communicated even by the EU.

4) If the USA wishes to negotiate and use its leverage against individual countries and not deal with a bloc then it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to decimate that country and show everyone else that you are better off staying in the EU.

You really need to think this through.....

It has been well thought through. However not blinded by americaphilia. They really are no friends of UK (or anybody) if it comes to it. What's the motto - America First!
Any how Pete, nothing has been settled. As the old adage goes - The proof of the pudding etc. On verra.

Point 1 especially, in fact I'd go as far to say that the US (under any president) would never let the EU get to a state of success because it would mean them losing their control over most of the world.

Trouble is; its the wrong question. And asked of the wrong people.
It'll be electoral suicide putting Johnson in as Tory leader at the next GE. He may be popular with the 100k odd conservative members but that's about it. Imagine his numbers when he actually has to answer questions and deal with the boredom from the minutiae and detail of legislation.

You're right, the EU doesn't want any more countries to leave which is why they are playing hardball with the withdrawal agreement. What happens after the withdrawal agreement is anyone's guess. But the smart money would be on a trade deal that benefits both parties. The EU needs a strong UK. The EU does not want to use UK economic hardship as a deterrent. The shambles the Tory party have made of leaving is deterrent enough.

On point four, you're confusing US foreign policy with what the US private sector will do.
If sterling is weak, vulture funds will devour UK assets like a bunch of piranhas. They wont give a toss about the stability of other EU member states.

I think his post is very well thought through.

I thought Boris gave a very good performance again at the hustings in the SW........
What did you make of his response when asked about the downside to the Australian Points Based system Pete? Does it still attract the Tories when their would be PM had no intelligible response? Pretty small threshold that is.........
